Worries: open surgery &methotrexate(rheumatrex
« on: January 02, 2004, 06:39:27 PM »
Dear all

Merry Christmas and  happy new year to you all, I hope this year brings lots of knee relief.

I haven't been around for a while so I hope everyone is well. As for me, well, now my family are behaving and not getting ill or having car crashes ( well maybe a little one but that's another story) its my turn!.

Next Friday marks the welcome arrival of my long awaited open synovectomy! I have had to go down the private route as I didn't trust my NHS OS who didn't really want to carry out the surgery, and hadn't done the procedure for a few years. I found a specialist surgeon but he only worked privately, but it'll be worth it.

I am a bit concerned though; I doubt many people have had this procedure and as I have already had a partial synovectomy I'm not too worried about all my synovium being removed....my worries are with the open knee surgery itself.

What are people's experiences of open knee surgery? how did it affect you in terms of scarring, ROM, recovery period etc? I'd love to hear from you just to put my mind at rest before Friday.

Another problem I have is with the medication I'm taking: methotrexate (or rheumatrex). Is anyone else on this? do they have bad side effects? At the moment every time I take it (once a week) I am so exhausted I sleep for hours as soon as I'm home from work and also have chronic stomach pains which can last up to two days. I'm still being monitored every two weeks with blood tests so I'm sure if it was seriously harming me I'd be told I just wondered if other people had similar side effects?

Thanks for taking your time to read this, I hope all of you are well

Take care
Lucy
