Meaning of report
« on: June 26, 2012, 08:56:35 PM »
Hi people,

1st post on here - hope somebody is able to shed some light on what the report on my knee injury actually means.
I've had a look online but can't pinpoint what it is.

Conclusion is as follows:

There is a undisplaced micro fracture of the medial aspect of the patella with gross bone marrow oedema and joint effusion.
There is also myxoid degeneration of the posterior horn of the medial meniscus.

I've been told the 2nd part is about long term issues I may have.

I still have to wait over a month before seeing a specialist so any more info on the above would be great!

Part 1 - There is a undisplaced micro fracture of the medial aspect of the patella with gross bone marrow oedema and joint effusion. ---- to me this means you've got a fractured kneecap - so don't bash your knee or you can make it worse. The small fracture is "non displaced" meaning the parts that broke are aligned right now - but won't be if you manage to mash the kneecap and break it more....

Part 2 - There is also myxoid degeneration of the posterior horn of the medial meniscus. ---- i think this means either thinning of the meniscus due to wear or a possible tear. You'd need more opinions on the meaning of this one....

My suggestions --- do water exercises for knee strength, wear a support that covers and provides a cushion for the kneecap so you don't bash it - even several layers of elastic bandage is better than nothing at all, and be careful what you do until you see the specialist. The fracture may be well on it's way to healing by then...after a month... if you are careful with it.
