Up coming surgery
« on: June 24, 2012, 11:21:43 PM »
Hi

I am due to have surgery in the next month or so and was just wondering what kind of recovery time I should expect. I have a partial tear to my ACL which the surgeon says he may not have to do anything with. I'm also having Plica removal done, clean out of old scar tissue and Chondroplasty.
I'm a bit worried about how much time i'm going to have to take off work. I missed 6 months of work last year due to complications of a Lateral Release and I don't think my boss would be as patient this time round if I needed to take as long off.

Recovery times vary for different people, but I would think that unless you have complications, you should be able to get back to work in a couple of weeks. Since you are not having bone work done, your doctor will most likely have you weight bearing soon after (but that depends on his protocol).

6 months off for LR complications?  :o Sounds like absolute hell!!
Have had tilted kneecaps for many years, and occasional patellar tendinitis.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply. I'm happy now that a couple of weeks off and I should be able to get back to work.
Ya 6months of torture. I had bleeding in the knee and ended up with an infection so the surgeon said he needed to go in again and flush out the knee, he repeated this 3 times before the infection finally cleared. Then I ended up with a clot. I have chronic pain in the knee since the op and had to be referred to a pain specialist and am now getting some relief from my visits to her. I still have instability, my kneecap likes to go for a little wander every now and again. I had terrible stiffness in the joint and the range of motion wasn't great, I still have stiffness but not to the extent that it was post op.
I know my knee is no where near as good as it should be but after that operation I afraid to get anything else done to it. My other knee must have felt left out and started to act up so that's why I have to have this op. I only hope there are no complications to this surgery cause I don't think i'd cope with 2 dodgy knees

Hi Carmel1982. Wishing you the best of luck with your upcoming surgery.
I'm facing an LR operation within the month myself, and hope I don't have the complications you have overcome after having yours.
Again, wishing you all the best!  :)

Hi CariG

Thanks for the good wishes. I too wish you good luck with your LR. Don't be worrying about it, some people get great relief from them i'm just the unlucky one who ends up with all the complications

Best of luck and hope all goes text book

Thank you Carmel!
Here's to us both having text book surgeries and results....and if that doesn't happen to be the case, then we can commiserate together!!!
Well time to go and hit the torture devices again...struggling with SLR with this splint on...but we'll get there.
HAPPY WEEKEND!!!!  ;D

I second that comment.  Here's hoping we are not both commiserating but you're right we'll get there.
Hope you have a good weekend

Hi!!
I'll be needing all those good wishes next Thursday. I got my op date after being cleared by my GP. Thankfully chest infection is all gone, and I'm fit and healthy (according to them!  ;)))
How are you holding up??

Hi,

Well the very best of luck for next Thursday, i'm sure you'll sail through the surgery. I hope the chest infection is cleared up for you and that all goes ahead.
I still haven't got a date for my surgery yet but i'm going away on holidays in 2wks time and I asked him to wait until after then to do the surgery so i'm sure i'll get the appointment very soon after I get back.
I'm kind of glad in a way that I told him to hold off until after my holidays as i've had a few health issues over the last week. I collapsed at work last friday and was out cold for about 5mins so by the time I came round there was an ambulance crew there moving me onto the ambulance. They still haven't given me a definite cause for what happened and it's happened 3 times since. They are testing me for diabetes and I also had a fast heart rate so they are running tests at the minute, I hope to have answers early next week. I doubt it's diabetes as over the last 4yrs i've changed my diet, lost 7stone and become a lot fitter, if they said to me back then that I was a diabetic I would have excepted it but not now when i've changed my lifestyle.

Anyway enough about all that. Hope you are relaxing and not stressing about the surgery. Keep me posted on how you are getting on

Hi Carmel,
Hope you're feeling better? That is concerning though, especially as you've blacked out a few times of late. Will keep everything crossed that it's not too serious, and not going to put your surgery back any further than necessary.
Thankfully the chest infection is all gone...and good riddance!!! My man has put me on isolation, so anyone even suspecting they could get sick are being told, nicely but firmly, to stay the hell away from us all until at least a month post op!!
Protective of what??  :)
So, where are you off to on holidays?? Great idea to go and kick your feet up and have some fun before all the fun and games begin with surgery and recovery.
I've just taken a break from 'Cari Safe' mode the house.....trying to get rid of anything that could cause an issue from Thursday night, as I won't be in any position to play dodgems after then! General clean and tidy up as well, which should bring some fresh air, and hopefully energy, into the house.
One of my friends has booked us in for a pedicure and manicure for Tuesday, just as a treat for us both.  So, yep, I'm taking it as easy as possible, and resting up but doing shifts of cleaning and organising at the same time. Just a bummer our big freezer decided to die last week....can't prepare meals in advance!! Oh well, we'll work around that issue.
Hope you have a great weekend in store, and that you're ok when you get the test results back.
Cari!  ;)

Hi Cari,

Well I got all my test results back today and I am a diabetic. I just have to adapt to a new diet which shouldn't be to bad seen as i'm eating most of what I should be anyway. I have tablets to take everyday and that should keep things under control.
Glad to hear your chest infection has cleared up, now all you have to do is stay away from any sick people between now and next Thursday and you're grand, but it sounds like your man has that sorted. Protective yes but at least you know he cares.
I'm off to the Canary Islands (lanzarote) for 2wks on the 22nd of July, and I can't wait. It'll be good to get a bit of heat and sunshine. All we seem to get here is rain and plenty of it. I'll think about the surgery when I get back but for them 2wks I won't let it enter my mind.
Sounds like you've gone mad cleaning, pity your freezer decided to die but i've no doubt you'll find a way round that. Great that you are getting a pampering session in before the surgery. It's just what you'll need to relax.

Hope you also have a great weekend, i'm just going to chill out for the weekend

Carmel

Good luck to us all....

Hi!!
Everything, so far, is going well. Pain management has left me feeling very cotton wool head for the past few days, put have been able to PWB since leaving the hospital Thursday afternoon.
There was a lot more damage done to the pattelafemoral compartment than we (including OS) expected to see.....which is good and bad news...depending on your point of view. The OS was a bit concerned and labelled it as bad news, whereas, me....maybe being a little naive, but I view it as good news.
Pretty much, the long and short of it is, I'll not be having a TKR as soon as we thought originally...but...I will require a PKR in the not too distant future.
Will see the OS again on the 23rd, so fingers crossed we find out more then!! No point in destroying perfectly sound, and more importantly, healthy bone if there is an alternative.
Gene, sorry to hear you're having complications.....not great to hear about the lack of mobility. What are they planning on doing for you in the near future?
How are you travelling Carmel? All excited about your holiday to the Canary Islands? Sounds like heaven on earth....and just what the doctor ordered!!  ;)
Hope the weekend is relatively comfortable for you both.....time for another snooze me thinks!!

Hi Cari,

I am happy for you that you are eligible for a PKR instead of a TKR.  With each of mine I was back to work in 6 weeks.  The first one made such a difference in pain that when we left the hospital the day after surgery my husband and I ran 3 errands and went out to lunch before going home-and it wasn't the drugs!  I have 2 Zimmer uni-compartmental replacements that can do up to 155 degrees (I have 130 because that is as close as I can come with chubby legs) and although kneeling isn't real comfortable I can do it when I need to.  I hope your appointment goes well on the 23rd.

Hi Carmel,

Have a safe and delightful vacation.  Hopefully you will come home and have your surgery date lined up promptly.
