Need advice on knee surgery
« on: June 22, 2012, 06:30:09 PM »
Hi, im 32 years old and live in New Zealand, I have just had my second acl surgery a year ago now, here is a little bit of history:

I had my first acl surgery in 1995 on my right knee, after tearing it playing rugby league, they used a patella graft, it seemed fine for a couple of years, but then started poping out and feeling unstable again, so I just put up with it and stoped playing sports, so last year I thought I would finaly go see a knee specialist about it, to see if anything could be done about it, the surgeon advised me that he thought he could get it 90% better, by performing another acl surgery using some of my hamstring, so I had tthe surgery in june 2011.

It has been 1 year since the surgery now, and my knee is 10x worse, I was feeling alot of pain, and instability, so the surgeon got me to do another mri, which showed that not only had my acl graft failed, but that now my pcl is completly gone, also my hamstring doesnt feel right and is constanly pulling when I try to do any exercise or weights on it, I asked him what could of caused this to happen, as I havent really done anythiny physical on my knee, apart from going to physio, but he couldnt really give me an answer.

So now he wants to take the pattela from my left knee to do my third acl graft, and some quad mussle from my right leg to do my pcl.

So any advice would be greatly appreciated, as I really don't know what to do, If I leave it my knee is only going to get worse, as it is very unstable at the moment, but am scared of having the surgery and it failing again, which would leave me in a worse situation, I really dont want to have my pattela and quad mussle harvested, but I have been advised that this would be the best method.

You could seek another opinion- and ask about the reason for doing both acl and pcl recons- is it necessary to do both, or can you function with an acl only recon? What about using an allograft versus an autograft? (cadaver graft versus self-donor graft) Depending on your desire for participating in sport after, etc, you may consider travel elsewhere and allograft instead of autograft, so that your "good" leg is unaffected if that option is open to you, if your local doctors can't do allografting for whatever reasons. some will travel for medical procedures if what they want isn't available where they live and their desire for sport etc is that strong, and they have the finances.

Hi Hectic. I agree with dm in getting a second opinion regarding your condition. Sometimes having a fresh set of eyes looking at your situation can be the best thing in the world...and open up new possibilities for you. I've done this myself for my own condition, with the full support of my GP. Do you have private health insurance or are covered by Medicare (or equivalent in NZ)? I've found in my own experience a huge difference in treatment options from private specialists compared to procedures public specialists are prepared to undertake. GOOD LUCK!!!
