Several operations have not worked what next
« on: June 20, 2012, 09:18:28 PM »
Hi all looking for some advice

Here is a quick background on my injury as result of an accident
Dislocated knee resulting in
(1) A grade 2 medial collateral ligament injury (2) Complete rupture of anterior cruciate ligament (3) Avulsion of perioneal nerve (couldn’t be repaired) (4) Complete tear to posterior cruciate ligament
(5) Popliteal tendon elongated but intact (6) Complete detachment of lateral ligament (7) Rupture of tensor fascia lata

I had surgery the following day which repaired some of the damage and was then transferred to a knee specialist
The knee specialist performed an arthroscopy and a few months later performed a left high tibial osteotomy this worked for a short time but after a few months the knee became unstable again and the surgeon advised the operation had not worked. Following this the surgeon performed a removal of metal work and a left ACL reconstruction using hamstrings from my right leg. Again this worked for a while but has now failed again and the knee is unstable again. I have been told now that there is not many options left and that for the time it will be review appointments only.

Does anyone have any experience of these procedures failing and if so what was the next step for you

Thanks for any replies

Dear Shortsy:  Sorry for all your pain.   Sounds complicated.   Did you see a trauma orthopedic surgeon? A friend of mine dislocated his two knees when sky-diving.  He literally put his legs back together.   This Doc only dealt with trauma injuries.   I hope you did for an injury like that.   LAS

A dislocation of the knee is  very seriuous from what I understand.    I agree something doesn't sound right.    You need to see somebody who deals in trauma injuries.    You have had several surgeries already and they didn't work so there may even be more damage.  You can't stay like that!

Maybe the Kneeguru will kick in on this one and give some advice.      LAS

Hi thanks for the replies

I was seen by an orthopaedic surgeon first and had surgery the day after the accident and was then transferred to another orthopaedic surgeon in aother hospital but was advised I would need further specialist treatment because of the amount of damage to the knee so I was transfered again to a trauma knee specialist. This surgeon was very good and for a while the operations worked but its just after a while my knee keeps becoming unstable again.  I am living in Ireland

I am going to go back and speak with my surgeon again as maybe I missed some important details. I had been given alot of information at the time. I agree that my knee cant be left like this its very painful to walk any distance and the knee can give way at any time :(

It sounds like your ligaments are weak if your knee can give out at anytime.   Maybe the ligament surgery failed and you need to get it repaired again.
I have read that this can happen especially if your in sports.  I'me glad your going back to the OS to get to the bottom of it.   LAS

Have you ever been told that you have loose ligaments or hypermobility syndrome ?

Also, what scans have you had to date ?

I will find out the name of the knee surgeon one of my Irish friends went to who was wonderful. Are you in Dublin ?

Sorry only gettin to reply now was away for a few days

No one ever mentioned hypermobility syndrome or loose ligaments, before the accident there was never any problems with the joints

I have a few xrays after the operations but mostly it was just exploratory surgery to determine extent of injuries

Ant names would be great I live up in the north west about 3hours from Dublin

I have reread your posts and it sounds like you might have a failed ACL reconstruction.   Do you play any piviting sports or participate in activities that could cause injury.  What do you do for work?  LAS

I will speak to my friend and get back to you.

Think you may need to go to Dublin to get the best care.
