I've been stupid and I need advice
« on: June 16, 2012, 08:20:21 PM »
I stupidly wore 9" heels and danced at a wedding 40 days after my patella surgery. While I was dancing (nothing too hardcore, and it was my first time in such insane high heels) I felt and heard a "crunch crunch" from my knee and I had almost hit the floor before someone grabbed me and carried me to the nearest chair. My kneecap formed an abnormal swelling that didn't go away even after icing it all night.

My orthopedic surgeon is literally distraught. He says he doesn't know what to do now as he has never had a patient break his or her patella in another place, in spite of the fact that it was hardwired. So now my patella is broken in two places and surgery is recommended. Is this doable? Is there another way to avoid surgery?:( Please I'm desperate for advice and I do realize that I brought all this on my self.

Can another surgery be done to fix the new fracture?

My understanding is that surgical correction typically leads to better healing, faster recovery, and more stable fixation of the bone.  (probably much better healing where there is a significant fracture, but check with your OS, the choice to do another surgery can be difficult to make and ultimately it's your decision of course.

Its unfortunate that this happened, but don't beat yourself up over it.  Except that - don't get stung in the same place twice, i.e. ditch the heels and give your body the time in needs to get better.  It can take a year or more.

Think of the bone like a bank account, try to withdraw or ask too much from it early, and it'll break.

What's done is done, and now you want to try and do the best you can going forward.

Honestly, at this point getting surgery might be the only way to absolutely make sure your knee doesn't go "crunch" again. :(  You can't really "cast" a patella I don't think.  You'd basically be hoping that the broken pieces don't drift apart.  Not to mention the potential threat of loose bodies floating around the joint tearing stuff up.  If it's any consolation, it's easy to forget that you need to take care of yourself when everyone is up and having fun. Still though, no more nine inch heels for a while!!  ;D

Honestly wearing 9" heals would not be a good for anybody even if you were lying down flat on or back!  On a more serious note maybe a brace would help for now.  They have several kinds but I know it takes weeks of  crutches/nonbearing.    LAS

It's time to find a specialist since surgery is probably going to be required. Since you're OS hasent seen this before he/she obviously isn't the right person to fix it. Not your average Joe OS for this one. I would do your homework and not just take a referral as written law.

hugs....I can fully understanding where you're coming from. Sometimes I find wearing 2" heels helps as my knee doesn't take all the pressure all the time, but only for short terms, and well strapped/braced.
Would certainly recommend seeing another OS who has seen and treated these type of injuries before.
And please don't beat yourself up about it. Accidents happen.
