Swelling from knee to ankle, anyone have this!?!?

I'm posting for a friend. This guy is real active and runs a ton, well he is now 12 days post op and swelling from knee to ankle. He has some major pain as well. Doc says no to infection. Anyone have some thoughts for us?

If you tell people what kind of procedure he has had (meniscus trim or repair), then people who have had a similar one can tell you if it is normal. Also is he weight-bearing or not is important (see below)

The swelling can be reduced in any case by keeping the leg raised (if possible above the level of the heart) and him doing ankle pumps. If he is sitting with his leg down all the time, the excess fluids produced to counter the trauma of the operation will pool in the lower leg. This is because the normal return mechanism for the blood supply is the contraction and expansion of the muscles in the calf (gastrocnimous) as you move around. The lack of normal movement means that there is no functioning return mechanism, so gravity has to be used instead. Icing also helps to reduce the swelling, but do not place the ice bag straight on the skin in case he gets frost burn. Wrap the ice bag in a towel, and only use it for a maximum of 20 minutes per hour.

If he has major pain and a raised temperature, he ought to go back to the hospital to have it checked out.

I hope he feels better soon and that it is nothing of consequence causing the
