Hi

I know how you must be feeling, I am six months post op on a HTO. Keep up with you pain relief, as this will help when doing physio/exercises. At 2 weeks I only had 30 degree bend, I now have the same as my good leg. Do you have access to a cpm machine, as this can help. Do you have exercises to do at home to help with this?

Ice the swelling as this should reduce it and make the bending a little easier.

Good luck and let us know how you get on. Keep positive.

Ms,

What is the OS's reason for the swelling?  At two weeks, has the swelling gone down at all?

Is your knee hot to the touch?  Is it red or pink??  It sounds painful, but the ROM is probably due to the swelling.

I really would be very curious as to what the doctor wants to do for your swelling and what he/she thinks it is?

I did not have an HTO, but I had multiple TKR's.  I am not trying to scare you because my case is in the 1/10th of 1 percent category...whereas yours is going to be excellent after you recover!

I had the first TKR and it was swollen and hot.  I had no ROM so my OS#1 did a MUA with no success.  After the second MUA, he stated my knee was infected.  He said infection was causing the swelling.  Finally, he indicated that he must remove the TKR, clean out my knee, and put another full TKR in.  On the table, he took tissue samples (as he had one 4 previous times in his office) and it all came back negative each time.
He decided I was not infected, so he cut out excessive scar tissue and closed me up.

OS #1 said he could help no more so off to OS#2.  Again, he said it was infected.  I won't go into the rest of the story, but I have had three (3) OS and three (3) infectious disease specialists who all said it swells due to infection, yet not one culture for infection ever turned up positive.

The underlying swelling is the issue and someone must determine correctly what is causing that swelling and treat you promptly.  If there is some complication causing the swelling, timely treatment will cure it easily.  If you wait, it might not be treatable.

In your case, you are only 2 wks post op so your might just be swelling because of surgery.  Take some time and read on this forum about AF (arthrofibrosis)  There is a paper by Dr. Frank Noyes on the subject in this forum.  Read it carefully and watch for the signs just in case.

I did not learn about it quick enough and now suffer.
