Knee locks up 2 yrs after TKA
« on: May 19, 2012, 06:17:46 PM »
Hi,

I'm wondering if anyone else has had a problem with a knee locking up after it's been replaced. I had a TKA on the right knee 2 yrs ago. It still has a lot of pain. I had arthroscopic surgery on it in 2/12 to remove some plica & the inflamed synovial lining. That only helped for the first month or so & now it's swollen & painful again. The last couple weeks I've noticed it has been catching a bit when I bend it. That concerned me but the bigger issue is that it is sometimes locking up completely when I walk. One minute I'm walking, the next minute I'm toppling over & on to the ground. This has happened 3 times in the last 2 weeks. I haven't really gotten hurt yet but I know one of these times I'll land on pavement or some other rough surface.

I have an appointment in July with my OS. In the meantime I'm supposed to try some PT as a last ditch effort to avoid more surgery. This locking up though seems like something PT won't help??

Thanks!

PT might help if the problem is scar tissue. It would help to break it down and prevent it from forming again. Have you asked your doctor about the possibility of arthrofibrosis? (Cue to Captain Russ  ;) ;) )
Have had tilted kneecaps for many years, and occasional patellar tendinitis.

Hi,

I haven't asked about AF.  Could I have AF & still have excellent ROM? I haven't had anymore falls lately but now I'm getting some pain that feels like the bones/implants are grinding together when I walk. I haven't started PT yet - waiting for my appointment with PCP first. Hopefully, I'll start PT in about 3 weeks or so then I'll see if that helps.

Thanks!

I'm no AF expert, but it might be one of the initial warning signs, before your ROM could start reducing. You should definitely ask your doctor about it. What is PCP by the way?

Hi,

PCP = Primary Care Provider  Some insurance companies including mine (Anthem Blue Cross New England) require you to have a primary provider (PCP) to issue referrals to specialists, do yearly checkups, etc. My PCP is a Nurse Practitioner who wants no part of my knees so I just use him to get referrals & go to specialists for anything else I need.

My ROM has been great in both of my replaced knees - that's the only good thing I can say about them so I hope I don't lose that!

Thanks!
