Hi

I've been taping my right knee for a long time now and have used just about all the varieties on the market at one time or another. I have to tape my patella for skiing and the tape can stay on for two or three days at a time. I always ended up with blistering, which I was told was not an allergy just a reaction to the pulling off off the tape more than anything else. The same person gave me a roll of Mefix plaster which I use as a protective layer under the tape. Since I started using the Mefix I have not had any problems with blisters or rashes.

Hi Sue,

I'm already using a mefix sort of tape - not sure of the exact brand - but its the white tape which goes down first right? I'm not putting the beige tape straight down onto my skin but it definitely could be just the pulling off of the tape. In that case i'll just have to put up with it because it will be better than doing more damage to the knee inside.

Thanks for your reply :)

Hi Rebecca,

How much of the knee cap area do you cover with the Mefix? I have a 10cm wide strip and it goes over the whole area before I tape. These days I just use bog-standard zinc oxide tape. I find it easiest to remove the whole lot as one unit, usually when soaking in a hot bath. I find that causes fewer problems.

I have incredibly dry skin and used to suffer really badly from ecesema as a child and young adult. The skin is still ready to flare if I use any of the fabrics that I'm allergic to.

Hi Sue,

I have found that it is easiet to get off in the shower :) I cover from top to bottom of the knee cap so its covered when my knee is straight and bent. Then i put the other stuff over the top. The actual brand is sp fix  and it is hypoallergenic... It might just be irritant from having it on there for a couple of days rather than from the tape.

Karen - sydneys lovely, went there over easter :)

Thanks everyone for your replies, i really appreciate it :D

Hi Everyone,

The physio doesnt think that its anything allergic, just one of those things that comes from using the tape and that i should let my skin rest and only use it if i know i'm going to have a busy day or do sport ect. He also recommended a brace that will do the same thing so i'll look into getting one of those.

Thanks for all your advice and replies :)
