Fulkerson osteotomy or PKR aged 39?
« on: March 10, 2012, 09:25:14 PM »
Hi I'm due a fulkerson osteotomy for my right knee in the next couple of weeks. I'm really worried about it and in a lot of pain with both knees. I don't know if I'm making the right decision. I don't know whether I should have PKRs instead which is my other option at this point although ive been  advised against it. I am 39 years old. Has anyone been in this dilemma and what did you do. I wish I knew what to do at this point. Thanks

If you are a candidate for a Fulkerson (your tt-tg offset must be off) then in order to have a successful PKR (a PFJR) you would need the Fulkerson anyway.   The PFJR will not be successful if the underlaying cause of the damage is not also corrected.  It's like putting new tires on a car with a bad alignment.

Caroline,

If you have an alignment issue, your OS is not suggesting a PKR is he/she?  KW is absolutely right, unless doing both it won't work.

More importantly, you are 39.  The path becomes steeper each time you have a PKR or eventually a TKR.

If your OS is suggesting something other than correcting your alignment, I would suggest you search out a patella-femoral specialist and start over....make sure you are getting the correct diagnosis and then back it up with two (2) more opinions.

I can tell you from experience, once you start down that path there is no going back.  Normally, PKR's and TKR's are hugely successful.  At 39 though, you are early.  I would give my left arm to go back and NOT do my surgery because my knee prior to the surgery was better than after any one of the 8 unsuccessful operations I have had.
