Chondral flaps with kissing lession treatment???
« on: January 20, 2012, 07:29:00 PM »
Here I am once again back at square one. My OS says I need a knee replacement but feels I am too young and too high risk (amputee). He has been saying this for almost 2 years now. I had another mri which has shown a full thickness chondral flap on my medial femoral condyle with kissing lessions. (meaning the bone under the cartilage is also damaged) I was originally told by a nurse my meniscus were torn too but during my follow up appointment I was told they were intact. I previously have had defects on my tibial surface and patella too but this didn't show on my recent mri. I have a bit of joint space on xray but not alot. I was told by my os's partner yesterday whom I was sent to by my OS that I am not a canidate for cartilage repair because I have kissing lesions and cannot do microfracture because my insurance won't cover it. He said I should see a pain mangement specialist and just deal with the pain, That I have no options, That me being a amputee and the fact that I am only 34, he wouldn't reccomend a replacement. I was crying so hard when I left I could barely drive home. I can't just live with this constant pain, I have no idea what to do from here. I am completely out of ideas I have seen every OS in my area who is suppose to be worth a crap and all of them have blown me off and refuse to truely fix my knee. I have has 2 scope and am worse then before them can't straighten or bend my knee. Can barely walk, sit, stand or sleep because of the pain, oh and I currently have never been prescribed one little pill for pain in the last 2 years except after surgery. But I am told to deal with it. I guess this post was kind of a vent but I am  open to any suggestion you all may have.

I just posted a topic just before reading yours, it sounds like we have the same frustrations. I feel so neglected by the whole medical society.  The only difference is my insurance will cover all treatment, but I'm too young for a permanent solution.  Being young were expected to carry on with out jobs and other daily activities while not getting enough sleep and walking around with excessive pain. I feel discriminated against for being young and maintaining my health. I really feel your pain.
BTW, I'm 41 and had a student blow out my entire knee when I was 39. As a result, I didn't even do anything which I could take some blame for my own physical ailment; unlike a large piece of society. Good luck, I know how you feel. :'(

I appreciate it Surry:) I have been so busy dealing with my mother who was diagnosed with Lung Cancer and has just started chemo, I haven't been back on here. I forgot I even posted. Anyway it does suck. I have been told by 2 os's that I need a replacement but am too young and that me being a amputee puts me at even higher risk, they are just too scared to touch it. I am too poor to travel too far, not to mention I am also responsible for helping my mom right now. But I know I need a high risk specialist and there just isn't one in my area. I also have 3 kids who depend on me so traveling is not a option for me at this time. I feel completely lost as what to do now. I go and see my regular os tomorrow I am hoping he will have something different to say. Couldn't have surgery right now anyway until I know how well my mom will do with this chemo but I am hoping to try and schedule something a few months out. I am so sorry you are going through this too it is a real let down to know they have the knowledge to fix it but wont when you have been "dealing" with it for so long anyway. Me being a amputee has basically put me in a wheelchair, I miss my old life!

Ok so seen the OS yesterday had another wasted appointment. I was told he would not replace my knee yet, he is sending me to physical therapy for 2 months to stregthen my quads and then will try microfracture. If microfracture don't work then he will then replace. I guess I will just deal with this pain for a while longer. I have my doubts the microfracture will work being I am a amputee and put too much stress on my leg for a good recovery from something like this. I am fine with physical theraphy for stregthening but the second they try and bend or straighten me I am walking out. It hurts way too bad at this point to even try and bend it, and will lock if it is straightend.
