Heard of Dr. David A. Shneider? He claims to fix lateral releases (though he still does them) but I've never heard of him on this board.

It has been a while since I visited his website, but I seem to recall that he does direct repair by sewing the native retinaculum rather than LPFL reconstruction using a graft. I have never seen a report by one of his patients, but I think you are wise to be on the hunt for testimonials because the failure rate of repair is known to be higher than reconstruction.

I think I'm going to lose my mind. I live in the second largest city in the US and I can't find anyone who will deal with my knee without a lateral release. And my experience with doctors is they'll mess you up then move on and tell you it's your problem.

KW yes Dr.S is my OS.  He does the repair, but I am not sure how he does it.  I did not get my op report, but then I had a partial replacement and they have to cut the renticulum to flip the kneecap anyway.  I certainly have no problems with it, excpet for some numbness.  I expected that anyway since the prior LR left some anyhow.   Quite often he will tighten up both sides as needed.  A LR is not always needed, but is quite often done with other procedures to center the patella (at least that's how Dr. S does it).

You could call the office and see if they have any patients with a repair willing to talk to you.
