Which should be first-knee or hip?
« on: October 11, 2011, 08:23:38 PM »
I have been told by seperate consultants that I need a complete knee relacement on left leg and a hip replacement on the right side. The hip specialist said that normally they start from top down i.e. hip first. However, due to the knee pain I am unable to walk without crutches. So which should be done first? I am having arthrsocopy on the knee on Friday to see if they can give some relief while waiting for the replacement.

I would tend to want to do the hip first - the recovery from it is much faster and easier than from the knee...having it nailed down before starting the knee would probably be really helpful to your recovery from the knee surgery - that being said, your OS is probably your best guide knowing your situation the best.

July 14 2006 allograft ACLR and meniscus repair
July 2011..reinjury - is my ACL okay??
December 2011- surgery - turned out to be a articular cartilage tear - MFX and lateral menisectomy

There has been a lot of research done that suggests hip problems can cause knee pain/issues. When looking at knee complaints, its very common for an OS to examine a patients hips. i.e. some of the pain in your knee could be caused from the hip issues. Your OS is probably thinking, lets sort that out, and then see what is really going on in the knee after the hip is squared away.

I am in a similar situation.  I need a Total Hip Replacement in right leg and a TTT in my left.  I am only 34 so I am going to get the knee done first and then hold out as long as possible on my hip.
