Something went pop when kneeling ? Now sore and swollen!
« on: September 21, 2011, 09:31:35 AM »
Hi I am new to this site but am really looking for any advice i am
A 20 year old female fit and healthy no problems with knees until last year! I was sitting on my knees watching tv when there was a big pop felt really bad pain in my knee and when I managed to get off the sofa it made a pop and pain went away went to bed that night with a sore swollen knee attended acident and emergency the next again morning were I was giving crutches and a refferal to orthopedics were I was told I had torn the cartilage attended there and got sent for an MRI scan and he was positive it was the cartilage ... Received my scan back showing nothing ! Went back again were I was told I have tilted knee caps and it's been a partial dislocation and reffered to physio after been at physio 6 months and off work 7 months after physio telling me to go back to see orthopaedics cause my knee kept giving way seen yet again a diffrent doctor who said my patella is tilted but not causing tracking problems and basically said that he thought  my hormones were playing a part in my pain and nothing wrong with me but sent me for another MRI scan ...which inbetween waiting had to attend accident and emergency again After not been able to walk and get out house for a week with badly brusing round my knee and swelling were I was now told by a diffrent doctor I had housemaids knee ! And basically wasn't interested ! Received my scan letter which showed swelling of the fat pad ! And have been left again and told it will go away ! Wonder if anyone can give me any advice and if anyone's ever had this cause it's brusing and swelling nearly everyday and does housemaids knee ? Even have anything to do with fat pad ?

Hi Tinkerbell11,

I don't know about all the medical stuff, but something is clearly wrong if your knee is swelling and is painful. Whatever it is, I would say that from my own experience and what some other KGs have said, an MRI isn't always 100% accurate. I had an MRI of my knee after pain and swelling for months, it showed nothing at all. Ditto xrays. After being shuffled round another department in case it was rheumatalogical, i went back to orthopaedics and said it was no better. He decided to do an arthroscopy to investigate the cause and hopefully put it right, and found advanced arthritis of my patella! When I asked about the MRI result he said that they didn't always spot everything...  ::)

Hopefully your problem is something that can be sorted out before too much longer, and there will be other people on here who will know a lot more. I would suggest you read around the site a bit (but try not to get scared - remember this is a site for those with knee problems!). The other thing is to maybe re-name your post to something more specific to your injury so that the title rings a bell with someone. Maybe something including 'something went pop when kneeling, now hurts and swollen, but MRI clear' or similar. There are so many different knee issues and that popping thing sounds significant (I don't want to guess...). The tilted patellas, query cartilage problem, possible partial dislocation etc suggest something is amiss. Whether it's muscular, cartilage or bone is another question.

If it's still giving you grief and you think something is really wrong, then keep plugging away at your doctors and get them to investigate a bit more. Excuses about 'hormones' and being dismissive don't sound particularly helpful.

Good luck!  ;)

I second that.  My MRI showed nothing too turns out I am now headed for my 3rd surgery this year.  Don't give up until someone listens and figures out your problem

Congratulations Tinkerbell11  :D When's the big day?  I would try searching the site for 'wedding' - I've definitely read a few threads where someone has been getting married, I'm sure there'll be some ideas there.

Remember, no wedding is completely perfect, and even if you've still got a limp on the day, you'll feel and look amazing anyway. Don't let your knee ruin your day! Plus the big bonus of a wedding dress is that it hides everything...even a brace  :)

Have a good weekend.

I know it's difficult, but try not to panic.

Sounds to me as though they've found and are treating the cause of at least some of the trouble - ie the infection in your knee. And as you say it's good that the meds are helping, and of course that they've pushed your appointment forward.

Just make the most of the appointment - prepare a list of questions you want to ask and take it with you. Dont be rushed or fobbed off, and make your problems crystal clear to him! Also, if you can, take someone else with you (make it clear to them that they are there to support YOUR questions - don't take them if they might end up siding with the OS in trying to make you 'see reason'! I speak from prior experience... ::) ). It's a strange phenomenon, but sometimes you get a better experience if you take another person rather than being alone. Depends on the OS, but it's definitely worth a try and won't do any harm.

Good luck! And I hope you finally get some answers and a clear way forward. Be thinking of you!

Good luck with your appt. I hope it turns up more answers for you.  I always take someone else with me 2 minds are better than one to come up with more questions or understand the answers you are given.
As far as the wedding congratulations the only thing I can think of is flat shoes. Lol I am quite short and would not have wanted that however it may help.

Good Luck,
Laurie

Sounds like lateral release that he's thinking of (?). Before going for it, I would suggest you read up on the procedure (whatever it is!). They're not always successful - it may well be the best thing to do, but it doesn't sound as though either you or he are that sure of it! If you felt rushed then that's not good. Sounds like he didn't give you the attention you needed.

Maybe consider getting another opinion - it's a hassle, but you don't want any surgery unless it offers the best possible chance of success with the problems you've got.

Sorry you didn't have a better experience Tinkerbell11. Try not to panic - no one can force you into this.

Thinking of you.

Remember that this site is mainly people who are having a difficult time, so you tend to get a more negative slant on things. There must be plenty of successful lateral releases out there, or they wouldn't be allowed to do them!

Find the relevant area of the site (further down the main page in the specialist sections) and post a question there called something along the lines of 'told to have a lateral release for tilted patellas. 70% chance?'. See what people think, and also do a search in the top right of page for 'lateral release' and another one for 'tilted patella' and see what comes up. If there have been people who had a different treatment for it, then ask them for their view as well. It all helps.

I do feel for you. Take care and good luck. Feel free to private message me if you need to get anything off your chest!
