Off and On Instability in knee
« on: July 28, 2011, 03:56:21 PM »
I was diagnosed with a sprain of the MCL about 11 months ago. It's suppose to heal within a few months, but it didn't. So I got an MRI and I was diagnosed with a possible partial tear of the ACL.

Doctor is willing to do exploratory arthroscoptic surgical to see what's going on and if need be, reconstruct the ACL.

Funny thing is, is that I would go from having instability, weakness, and discomfort in the knee on some days to everything is okay on other days.

It's like a seesaw. I would change my mind on pursuing surgery depending on what day it is.

Even the doctor has made different assessment of my knee on different visits. Sometimes he feels the looseness in the knee (compare to the other non-injured knee), sometimes he doesn't.

Is this a sign that whatever is wrong with my knee is healing? Or are my muscles more naturally tense on some days, so my knee feels less loose.

I donít think I have answers for some of your questions, but definitely feel your frustration. I struggle with many of the same thoughts. One day I think Iím fine, the next day, not. I also seemed to get a different assessment with each visit. At some point, heís mentioned an MCL tear, possible ACl, possible Meniscus, Bone bruise, chondromalacia, pulled hamstring tendon, lateral patella instabilityÖ I mean really, what hasnít been wrong?

I will say looking back and piecing everything together Ė for me at least there seems to be a logical progression or method to his madness. Meaning, he knew where we were going all along, but had to rule out a few things along the way.

Iíd say, if you arenít comfortable get a second opinion. My OS willingly referred my to another doctor/specialist once he determined the best course of action, given the simple fact he hasnít done that many of the procedure Iím considering (MPFL Recon). Regardless of who does the surgery, Iím glad I have the opportunity to get a second opinion from one of the best.
