post-op femoral osteotomy swelling
« on: April 12, 2011, 03:26:28 PM »
Hi, I am 3 weeks into my osteotomy.  It was a distal femoral osteotomy to correct poor joint alignment/arthritis.  I also had a lateral release of patella, and a lot of debriedment.  My history is a former ACL surgery 1996.  I am having a few issues.  The swelling has reached a plateau, it does seem to want to go down.  I ice it at night.  I am taking for pain oxycontin 10mg twice a day with vicodin about twice a day for breakthrough.  Pain is also an issue.  I am supposed to go therapy, but my swelling and pain are so bad I can not seem to bend the knee very far.  I am still non weight bearing until the 6th week.  So I use my crutches everywhere.
My doctor has not yet started me in the CPM.  And i don't think I could do it anyway.
Is this swelling, three weeks after normal?  The incision looks great.  So I know it not a complication from infection or anything.  I am getting a little discouraged and worried if there is something wrong.

Hi Annaliz,
Swelling is still very normal at this stage,   Best advice I can give you is ice and elevate,  Ice with something between the skin and ice and elevate above your heart, so way up. ;)
This is a very hard surgery to recover from we are talking 6 months to a year. Try to be patient and remember this is a marathon not a sprint.
Take care,

Great advice thank you.  Another question,, my knee is popping a lot, when i change positions, move it from sitting still.  This worries me too.  Any thoughts?  It was not popping before the surgery,  does not feel like the knee cap, feels deeper or something. hard to tell.

Hi Annaliz
Mine does a lot of popping now.  If it worries you ask the OS or PT when you see them again. Does it hurt when it pops or doe sit just feel weird?
Hope everything else is going well. :)
