Glucosamine, Chondroitin, and SAM-e
«
on:
November 08, 2003, 05:30:08 AM »
Is there a recommended dosage one should use for these?
I've been taking as it says on the boxes:
2 -200mg tabs of SAM-e each morning
1 - 500mg glucosamine/400mg chondroitin x 3times a day
Is there any evidence that higher dosages of these has any additional benefit? What do you all take?
thanks,
Tim

Hey Tim, I don't take Sam-e , but I do take Glucosamine and Chondroiton. I take 2000 mgs of Glucosamine, my Chiropractor says he has seen no evidence in literature that it is more beneficial, but he says it can't hurt.
Hopefully that helped...the Chondroiton is in my Glucosamine so I couldn't tell you how much there is...because I never actually looked. My Chiropractor also says that MSM is very good, and told me to get Glucosamine with MSM next time.
HOpe thtat helped...not sure it did.

Thanks Linds,
I've read other people's posts about taking 3000mg of Glucosamine and it providing more benefit.
I've also read that the glucosamine helps with scaring, which I need to foster to rebuild my PCL.
I've never heard of "MSM" - time to google it!
The SAM-e suposedly helps joints, but also with mood, which I can use 'cause my knee is really bumming me out.

I also take 400mg of SAM-e every morning. I noticed a definite improvement in knee discomfort as soon as I started taking it. Plus the mood elevation is a nice bonus, and in everything I've researched there are no negative side effects. Expensive, but IMO, quite worthwhile.

I have repetative strain knee problems and I've been taking glucosamine and msm for about 2 years and it's helped "Somewhat" .. a customer of mine said she's pain free (patello-femoral) from taking Knox gelatine (nutra joint) so I started it about a week ago but have'nt seen a difference.
interesting about the Sam-E.I'll have to try it thanx.

I believe the dosage for glucosamine/chondroitn is 1500 mg/1200 mg per day spread out in 3 doses as recommended by John Berardi. http://www.johnberardi.com/articles/supplementation/makingsense.htm
Beware of large doses of glucosamine as it will lead insulin resistance that could lead to type 2 diabetes, a plight worst than knee pain. Or check out:

Check this thread - towards the bottom there's some info on SAM-e:
http://www.kneeguru.co.uk/cgi-bin/KNEEtalk/YaBB.pl?board=diet;action=display;num=1066212798;start=5#5
If you type three consecutive ?'s you get the confused smiley. Either use less ?'s or check the "Disable Smilies" box when you post.

Oh, and yes, I would guess you can get it in Canada. You can mail order it here in the US from places like drugstore.com

Hello Tim,
I have found a product that I think has not been mentioned in any postings called 'Devils Claw' that I posted yesterday in the Knee Arthritis - Diet and nutritional supplements section that does not seem to have had many reads, but feel the information given will be helpful to Knee Talk Members.
The link below will lead you to my posting which explains product in more detail.

Members using the above link, please leave any messages in the correct catagory concerning 'Devils Claw' that sounds very good to me, Nick.
