splotchy scars
« on: March 20, 2011, 03:57:29 PM »
I had my PCL repaired 4 months ago, and the knee is doing great. The scars used to be fading, until recently, they started looking almost splotchy looking. Especially the scars on the inside of my thigh, they just look awful, they look bright red and purple, and it almost looks like it's spread out. The one over my tibia used to be barely noticeable and now, it's a fascinating shade of hot pink. They all recently just became darker, brighter, and it almost looks like they just came apart. It's too late in the game for them to be coming apart, and they were healing nicely until just recently. I've been using vitamin E oil and aloe on them, just not sure what's going on. I realize it's really a purely cosmetic issue, but does anyone have any ideas? I thought it might be some sort of allergy, but I don't have rashes anywhere else, they're not itchy, just a pink/purple/dark red that they weren't before.

Soozles,
I tried Vit E oil on my scars and had a reaction to it.  My incisions got very red.  I developed eczema on my harvest incision after I started the Vit E oil.  I am very fair skinned.  My mother is allergic to it as well.  Did you do a spot test with it before putting it on your incisions?

I've been using the vitamin E for the last 3 months without an issue. I used it a year ago when I had wrist surgery and used it on my scar from that without any problems. The wrist scar healed up really well, you have to look hard to see the scar from that, I don't even notice it anymore. So I don't think that's what it could be, unless I just developed an allergy to it one day completely out of the blue.

Well, I suppose you can stop using it and see if it goes away.  If it does go away, you could try it again and if it happens again then it could be that.  You didn't say that you had used it before, but I guess it is like anything, you can develop an allergy or sensitivity.

With the weather getting warmer, have you exposed these areas to sun for the first time? or first extended time? The sun could do that, possibly.

Nope, no sun. I'll be honest, I've been too lazy to shave my legs all week, so even if it were nice enough to wear a skirt, I still wouldn't. No new lotions, nothing has changed.
