Blood in throat after gen anesthesia
« on: March 10, 2011, 06:27:02 PM »
Now 3 days post op lateral release/ VMO Advancement and quad ligament repair. I started getting lots of bloody mucus in my throat yesterday. Dr said was irritated from the tube during surgery. Nervous about it and it's uncomfortable. Anyone had this before that can ease my mind?  Surgery went great otherwise though. Dr very pleased with how tight my knee cap is now.

The tube more than likely caused some irritation.  It is also normal for your throat to be sore for a few days.  Make sure you do some deep breathing and coughing exercises to get air to the bottom of your lungs, and to help get that mucous up.  If you are having a high temperature, or you are having trouble breathing then you should get it checked out.

Don't worry McMurrow, I had the same thing too, my throat didn't feel right for a few weeks afterwards, I'd imagine the pipe knocks it about a bit on the way down <yuck>.  All the best with your recovery  :)

My cure for the post op sore throat is chocolate milk or a McDonald's choc milkshake.  It is a good reason to treat yourself, and it is very soothing on your throat.  I get one as soon as I am discharged from the hospital.  Ice cream works for tonsils..lol.  I hope you are feeling better soon ;)
