Info on Unloader Brace
« on: March 10, 2011, 12:03:27 AM »
Hi.

I went to my OS today and he ordered an unloader brace for my medial compartment of my right knee so I can return to work.  Anybody else tried an unloader brace to prolong time before PKR?

I have tried Donjoy, Breg and Townsend unloaders. I would definatly recommend the Townsend, I wore a medial unloader for two years and it was great. The donjoy and breg were horriable and uncomfortable.

Thanks for your reply.  Was your brace custom fitted or over the counter?  I am pretty active...running, softball, mother of 3 kids,  and martial arts and would LOVE to be able to do these things again.  I know custom fitted is much more expensive, but if I can put off a PKR as long as I can, I will try anything!

Hi,

I've been wearing an 'Ossur' unloader brace since last July and it definitely helps.
I took it as a temporary option whilst deciding whether to have a high tibial osteotomy or a half knee replacement.
It was custom made and free on the NHS.

I have been able to dance, run in it and with the help of extra strapping, I've even skied with it on and its worked a treat.

Good luck with it!

Mike

Thanks!  I scheduled an appointment with an orthotist for tomorrow and will discuss my options.  Your input has helped me with my approach going into the appointment.  I appreciate all of you!
