Need some quick input on meds *** Darvocet ***
« on: December 09, 2010, 08:31:45 PM »
I've been taking Darvocet, usually only at bedtime so I can sleep. However, it was taken off of the US market last week, so my OS's PA called in Talacen. My insurance will cover the generic form Pentazocine, so that is what I got filled. However, my pharmacist is having trouble getting the Pentazocine and they said I may have to get them to call in something else. So I'm wondering a few things-- for others who were taking Darvocet, what is your OS switching you to? And is anyone else taking Talacen/Pentazocine? Does your pharmacy have trouble getting it? I sometimes have trouble finding meds that I can tolerate, so I feel lucky that both of these have been OK so far. I really don't want to mess with this!

Yes, Darvon and Darvocet. They've been out there for probably 40-50 years, I think. But now they are saying that it can cause "cardiac toxicity"--whatever that means. I think the news report said that the latest research indicated that the risks now outweigh the potential benefit so the FDA asked them to voluntarily take it off the market.

I'm not needing anything that strong right now. My pharmacist finally located some more of the pentazocine and got me the rest of what I needed, so hopefully this won't be a problem next time. But I'm still curious to know what other Darvocet users are switching to.
