PKR to TKR
« on: December 04, 2010, 06:07:20 PM »
I had a lateral PKR five yrs ago and am now getting quite a lot of pain medially. I suspect I need to have something done about it. My question is: can I have a medial PKR alongside the lateral PKR or does the old one have to be chiselled out and a TKR put in? I expect I'm being really stupid but I hate the thought of the succesful one being disturbed!

Hi Boyley. I can't answer your question directly-but I had a medial PKR done Sept. 08 and now the lateral and medial portions of my knee are arthritic (badly) so there is no question I need to get it revised to a TKR, which I'll be doing in the next 2-3 months. Not sure if an ortho will give you another partial implant! You're very lucky that you've gone this long without a problem with your PKR.

Thanks, Boyley. I will. My surgery is scheduled for March 2, so not too much longer to wait. Hoping you'll have a successful outcome with whatever you end up doing.

I was in the same situation as you. I had a medial PKR 6 years ago and my lateral compartment was the one that was going bad on me. My OS told me it was my choice that he could put in a lateral PKR or convert to a TKR. There are drawbacks to both. After much consideration I decicded to convert to the TKR because my knee cap also was giving me some troubles and I didn't want to recover from the Lateral PKR and then have to convert to a TKR. I had my surgery Nov 30, 2010, about 9 weeks ago and it was tought at first but is getting better every day. I just got back from a great vacation to Disneyland and my knee did pretty good with rest breaks as needed.
