Broken Kneecap Recovery Time??
« on: November 18, 2010, 09:46:56 AM »
Hello, I am 22 years old and last week i shattered my patella (kneecap) on a rock and had surgery on Friday November 12, 2010. I broke it into 8 pieces and they tied it back together with fiber, screws, and different hardware. I am anxious to get back out on the snow and get back to doing what i love and was wondering if anyone out there had any insight as to how long this recovery process is going to take? I can't bend my knee for 6 weeks but i am already baring weight on it. If anyone has any info they can offer me i would much appreciate it.

thank you

Hi,     I am sorry that you have had to become a member of our "club", but its good that you have found this site.
Unfortunately this injury is not one to recovery from quickly.
The lack of movement in the leg causes ROM to disappear, the muscles also disappear, and the surgery itself can create issues, muscle damage, nerve damage, and scar tissue can also be a problem.
Basically, its like learning to walk again,it requires lots of hard work and exercise,to rebuild your leg strength etc,
I myself, am just starting to head to-wards" normal" at 8 months post-op.

As all our injuries differ, and the way our bodies heal and react to surgery is different,i dont think there is a time scale for this injury, but whatever, it is still a long road to recovery, the only advice i can give you, is try to remain positive throughout, you will have your good days, as well as bad days, you will at times get very frustrated, and feel as though you just aren't getting any-where,but you do get there, and this site is where you will get all the advice and support that you need, and you will realise that you are not alone in what you are going through,as we are all going through, or have been through it.Especially on the pages headed."bone breaks around the knee" as these pages specialise mainly in fractures.

Every-one on this site will tell you the same, this is a marathon not a sprint,so take notice of your OS, and your PT,once your physio sessions commence, and you will be fine.
Take on board all the tips and advice every-one gives you, but just bear in mind, what is good for one person may not be good for another.
So be patient, take it one day at a time, and any-thing that you can do today that you couldn't do yesterday, is an achievement.
Hope this helps.....I would like to wish you all the best and a speedy recovery.
                       Regards.

Hi, where you have posted is mainly for new threads, and covers a lot of different topics, i only go onto these pages now, as i feel i may be able to help others like yourself, but may-be you should look on the bulletin board, under "The specialists office",then click on to "Bone breaks around the knee",i learned so much from that.I think that helped me to keep my sanity at times, communicating with so many in the same situation as i was.
Please keep posting on your progress.
         Kind Regards.
