Anybody else needed a blood transfussion after a big surgery?
« on: November 04, 2010, 03:35:41 PM »
I just got a trochleoplasty about 7 days ago. The surgery was huge, I have a huge scar and the doc said I lost a lot of blood.

I have been feeling terrible, very weak and my heart feels like its gonna explode at times. My head also hurts like hell and i can feel it right behind the eyes.

The nurse told me today that my haemoglobin is very low and that Im gonna need a blood transfussion tomorrow. Im honestly really scared because ive never had this happen to me with any surgery, probably because they were much more minor but still. I never even thought that this wouid maybe happen.

Has anybody been through this? Man I feel terrible.

I had a blood transfusion 2 years ago. Its not as bad as it sounds and after the first unit of blood went in I felt much much better. Before I felt so tired and weak. It takes about 4 hours per unit of blood. It is really boring having to sit around whilst its going through. I was meant to have 5 units but ended up having 4 because I told them I wanted to go home because I was so bored.

I had one 8 years ago....crikey time flies. I was already in hospital at the time as it happened, and had 4 units in total. Nothing to worry about, just a drip line put in and the blood slowly trickles through into your vein, just a case of sitting, or in my case lying about until all was back to normal. You'll feel much better for it.  :)
