hardware removal
« on: September 19, 2010, 05:47:31 AM »
I broke my kneecap last Sept. 14, had ORIF surgery on the 18th of Sept.  I am scheduled to get the hardware removed on the 22nd of Oct. I have read that so many others who have had the same problems as I,,such as the constant dull ache, swelling still evident, rubberband feeling, etc. have felt much better after the hardware removal. I was seriously looking forward to it, but after seeing my OS, I am not sure. He made comments that this did not work for everyone, as far as making the knee feel better,, that if I ever fell again, I could break my patella again if I have the hardware taken out,,,etc., etc. it's almost like my OS was trying to dissuade me from doing this. But I am just so uncomfortable, and there are so many things that I can't do,,I am willing to try anything if it will help my knee feel better. Does anyone  have any encouraging words about this hardware removal?

hi, maybe you would be better to put your post on, "bone breaks around the knee", its on the bulletin board, under" the specialists office,"there are lots of threads on that section, quite a few are about hardware issues, maybe will give you all the info you could also read my thread on that section, under the heading,(hardware removal , advice given to me whilst on holiday.)i think that would also answer your questions, its advice that was given to me by a nursing sister of 25 years on a fracture ward.
  hope this helps.

Hi there.  I had my hardware removed in Feb 2010.   Instant relief in my situation.

I had the wire around the knee cap, figure 8 over the top with 2 clips across the front.   I started to have a really sensitive knee and skin around 8 to 9 months with the wire in.  The surgeon told me from the beginning that the wire would be removed after 12 months.  I did my best to hold on however when the surgeon saw it 9 months later he said that my knee wasn't liking the wire being in there.......I KNOW, it looked like it was about to rip through my skin in one spot.
After a CT to check the bone had formed properly the wire was removed at 11 months.   I went into surgery at 9.30am and was up and walking un aided 11.30am and home by 1pm.  Instant relief.  I had to let the stitches heal before starting back at physio.

Now I did meet a lady at physio that had the exact same injury as myself but a week later.  Her wire was put in and she was told that it would stay in.  The same surgeon did both of our knees.  I am sure he even wired it differently based on mine coming out and hers was to stay in.  When i would catch up with her at physio she said she didn't have any discomfort from the wire, which was good considering.  I don't know what the difference was between us two for the surgeon to leave hers in and take mine out but I am thinking it was age.

All I can say is having the wire removed was the best thing in my situation and the recovery is I think 2 weeks to get the stitches out.

Good luck.
