I don't speak medical-what's my dr mean?
« on: August 18, 2010, 12:35:33 AM »
I got an mri last week on my 3 month old injury to my knee from a car accident.

My dr left a message:
Degenerative change to the lateral compartment, not a definitive tear.  ???

What's wrong with my knee?
Is it gonna go away?
What should I be doing/not doing?

I dont speak medical either but it seems self explanatory.

Theres been an affect on your lateral compartment from the accident, a negative one but its not torn and possibly not serious.

If your walking fine then your OK for now. Will it go away, maybe maybe not.

You should be talking with your doctor or an orthopedic specialist for further advice. And obviously if you feel pain when putting pressure on the knee, then dont put ANY pressure on it.
-Ruptured ACL May/June 2009 - heard a pop.
-Started walking normally few days later
-MRI August 2009, confirmed rupture
-Was to see surgeon but letter never came, didnt follow up
-Heard pop several times after initial incident
-Locked my knee 06/10 went for surgery 14/07for ACL and Meniscus repair

Thank you mc. :)

Right now my knee is swollen all the time and is hurting pretty bad. I don't have health insurance or employment, so not sure if I have to go after the responsible party. The MRI is pretty much it for me, but I have time to wait and see what happens.

In that case, you want to follow RICE - Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation.

Get a bag of peas, ice pack or something like that and place it over the swollen area, it should reduce it and the pain. Also make sure to elevate it above your heart, so lay back and raise your leg up on a bunch of pillows.

Best thing is to speak to a specialist as soon as you can. At least you'll know what the options are and how serious it is. Get a copy of your MRI if you can.
