Fractured Patella vs. end of my skate days?
« on: August 13, 2010, 05:50:14 AM »
hey my name is Drew, and i just recently had a non displaced 2 part fracture in my right knee. I'm an addicted skateboarder, meaning i skate every day, most all the time and am hoping to never quit until old age takes me or until i can't walk anymore. I skate my hardest every day and theres not a moment that goes by when i don't try to improve myself on my board. A few weeks ago, approximately 2 weeks to be somewhat exact, i was skating my local park and lost my footing going over one of the spines. i was jetted off my board and landed knee and face first into what was basically a slanted concrete wall. i sat there in excruciating pain for about twenty minutes holding my knee before laughing it off and getting up, and driving myself home to then be taken to the hospital. After all the usual tests and X-Rays, the doctor who was seeing me told me that she was extremely amazed that i wasn't crying or screaming in pain, as i had a a mild 2 part fracture. the first two nights were extremely painful, the swelling was insane and i couldn't move without assistance or without stopping every two seconds to absorb the pain. Fast forward to now, two weeks later, and i can get up on my own, move my leg sideways, but not forward from my hip, and am still not able to bend it more than maybe 4 or 5 inches. i haven't been going out, mainly just sitting on my couch and taking it easy.
my question: will i ever be able to go back to my normal skate routine? or am i doomed to never being able to skate at my full potential ever again? I am taking two 1500 mg glucosamine pills every day and also trying to get back some motion back in my knee, but i am doing so at a very slow pace, no major movements or anything. To repeat my injury, i have a two part fracture in my right knee cap, non displaced and somewhat mild according to the physician i spoke with. i didn't have any tension wire put in, no surgery or anything other than a removeable leg straightener that i use religiously every day unless im laying down or asleep. I would love to hear some responses, good or bad. I need to know the truth or atleast some professional and non professional opinions. Skateboarding is my only true love and i don't know what i would do if i wasn't able to continue on with it. i'm also very aware of the chances of breakage again, so i know that when and if i can get on a board again, i will be taking it at a slow steady pace for awhile atleast until i feel safe enough to start shredding again. Thanks!

Welcome - sorry you had to join us.  There's a section of the board called the specialists office and in there there's a sub board called bone breaks around the knee here's the link.
There are a lot of people with patella injuries that hang out there and can give you a better assessment of your recovery options.
To give yourself your best chance of recovery, you need to follow the instructions of your OS and PT.  Don't push to far too fast.  I know it can be very frustrating, but take it slow and easy.
Sending healing rays your way

Sounds like you are young and will heal fast. I fractured 10 weeks ago, surgery with five pieces fused with wire. I slipped on water. So you see it can happen anywhere or anyway.  I am planning on getting back to a normal life and doing  what I want. You will know when the time comes. For now get healed and take one day at a time. Good Luck
