crack then grinding

A little about my history 1st. I have had 4 knee operations in 5 years all due to torn meniscus cartilage.
My left has had a complete removal of the medial cartilage and my right knee has had 2 operations to repair the medial cartilage.
I have been playing football the last two years with no problems. However the other day I was jogging along well I felt a crack in my left knee then it swolled up. The following days saw the swelling increase and I had crackling And grinding noises in my knee, not really much pain when straightening or bending nor if I apply any pressure to the knee. Tho I sometimes get a pianful click in the knee when walking.
I havn't seen the specialist yet as I'm waiting for an appointment. Anyone have any advice to what I might have done?

I am not a expert, but the last time my knee,in March popped, and was catching, i needed to have a loose fragment removed, and my meniscus trimmed. Once it was all cleaned up, the popping stopped.
