Pain behind knee when flexing
« on: July 08, 2010, 10:16:33 AM »
Hello everybody,
I get a strange pain behind the left knee (I write behind since the pain is not in the knee joint itself) when I flex the knee joint fully.

Thereby it does not matter if I am putting weight on the knee (i.e. standing squatt) or sit down on the legs (i.e. with the buttocks on the feet) or sit and pull the foot into a half lotus position (i.e. yoga/meditation position).

The pain begin to occur sharply as of a specific degree of flexing (i.e. knee almost fully bent) and I got the a strong notion that something (I believe a tendon) is being squeezed thereby causing the pain.

The strange thing is that once I enter into the position where the pain begin, if I leave the knee joint fully (or nearly fullly) flexed (i.e. it is painful), after about 30 seconds the pain begin to diminish! After a few minutes remaining in a flexed position the pain is gone! When I extend (i.e. stretch) the knee again it is painful again but this passes quickly.

Except for this the knee is fully in order. I am mid-40's do sports 2-3 times a week (jogging, biking etc) with absolutlety no pain.  I have this pain for 3-4 years already. I took a 3 month complete sports rest a while ago and it did not help (was hell to get rid of the belly afterwards though :P )

I have been to a specialist who can not find anything and says that the knee is very stable (he could not get his mind off the knee joint I think).

Has anybody out there had this kind of strange symptoms? I have googled but not found anything.

Thanks in advance.

See if you can get an ultrasound scan on the tendon.  Which tendon do you think it is?
Feb 08 Inurred right knee
18 months of physio, knee tracking but knee still painful
Aug 09 Scope - Small tear in acl, fragment found in postereo-lateral compartment, suprapatella and lateral plica and small defect in mfc.
May 10 Right knee feeling better but left knee causing trouble as a result o

... I dont know actually. The problem is that the pain is not close to the surface (i.e. skin) but deeper in the soft tissue on the back of the knee AND since it only appears when the knee is flexed I can not get any fingers inside (due to the flexing "closing the opening") to locate the spot where the pain is.

Thanks for your answer and the ultra sound suggestion though.

I've had a lot of soreness and some pain there.  I've got a little on my opped knee now but it doesn't bother me too much and I have it on te other knee and it bother me a little but isn't too alarming , though I would like to get to the bottom of it, so I'm probably going to ask for ultrasound. as the tondons behind the knee feel a bit lumpy.  Do you ever get a kind of pinging feeling in your tendons, where it kind of feels like a guitar string ahs been plucked.  I used to get that all the time in my hamstring tendon on my opped knee and it used to feel really weird but I don't get it anywher enar as bad now or anything like as often.

Read up about Baker's cysts - http://www.kneeguru.co.uk/KNEEnotes/bakers-cyst

I do not know whether that is the problem in your case, but it is a common problem at the back of the knee, particularly if you oten have swelling of the knee.

@Northernlight: My problem is 90% similar to yours. Also I cannot easily touch my feet with my knee locked( can touch but with quite some discomfort and mild pain). On the other leg, I can touch my feet effortlessly. I am a runner.  I trued to flex my knee and I get a similar symptom as you described.
I gave rest for 2 weeks and visited a physio. He asked me to do foam rolling over my hamstrings, adductors, IT Band and then in a 20 minute session, I was able to touch my feet very easily.
After that I ran for 30 minutes, but ended up with the same symptoms. Not sure if you got a permanent solution now for this problem. Can you share what happened ultimately?
