Can I choose?
« on: June 29, 2010, 08:10:20 AM »
I have been reading about different types of operation that can be used to reapir a ruptured ACL, i wanted to know whether i had the choice of which one i wanted or does the decision lie with the OS?

Thanks in advance.

What I have learned since being on this site is that most surgeons will have an option that they use, some specialise in one option rather than the other. I like you, thought I would have to make a decision but my O.S uses the hamstring option so thats what I am having if all goes well on the 19th July.
At the moment there are a few of us who are having the aclr in July and apart from one I think the hamstring is being used.
I hope this helps take care Tez

Well, this depends on a few factors.

If you are stuck with one OS, then you have a choice if your OS gives you one. Otherwise, you are stuck with the graft the OS offers.

If you have the freedom to choose your doctor, then yes you have a choice. You decide which graft you want and find the doctor that offers that graft. Or likewise, you choose a doctor you are comfortable with and go with the graft he does best.

There's always a choice, it just depends on what the patient is willing to do make it.

So the question is, are you "stuck" with a particular doctor? If so, then you should ask the doctor what graft choices there are, if any.
