Hey Everyone! Okay so in one day this Tuesday I'm going in for a LR on my right knee and he's going to fix a chip/crack in my knee then clean it all up. About five years ago I had a LR on my left knee, everything went good. Well I went away last week so didn't really think to much of the surgery but then woke up today and reality hit and I am scared out of my mind. I cried a lot today. I'm not necessarily scared of the surgery or really the recovery as I have had it already on the left knee. It's the anesthesia that scares me. I'm a light smoker but still a smoker for about 6 to 7 years, I also have acid reflux....will these two things affect the anesthesia? I have such a fear of not waking up and it is literally making me sick. My nerves have definitely gotten the best of me! :( :(

I noticed before someone said they had a local anesthesia done not the spinal but the local and they were awake for it. My surgery is scheduled to be about 45 minutes and I'm starting to consider maybe doing the local. What does it entitle? Will they still intubate me? Does it hurt....or should I just really do the general anesthesia....ugh I dunno guys I need some words of advice I am so scared right now...I don't want to do this!!!!!!!!!! :'( :'( :'( :'(

No for God's sake dont cancel.  I dont advocate smoking (now an ex smoker) but in years gone by was pretty heavy and also have had anaesthetics (spelt wrong lol) and had no problems.  I reckon you will be fine, maybe you should tell your doc your fears also would be good idea just to give up for a day or two preferably 3 before the op.  Hope you get this in time.
All will be well Im sure
Cheers

When I went for my scope last yaer I had a chance to speak to the anesthetist before they brought me down for surgery and i explained about the acid reflux.  They said they would give me a drug to make sure there was no problem with anything coming back up.  Besides, you can't eat or drink from the nigth before, just sips.  There's really no need to worry about that.

I sympathise a lot - I have my very first surgery coming up in about two and a half weeks, and I'm really, really nervous about the anaesthetic. I've been reassured over and over that it's actually very straightforward and I shouldn't have any problems, but something about that idea of being out cold just gives me the shivers. I'd be nowhere near as nervous if I knew I could be awake for it, but unfortunately I won't find out if I have the option of a spinal until I meet with the anesthesiologist on the day of the surgery. I'm gritting my teeth because I know I need the surgery, and I just have to try and get over the fears about the anaesthetic.

My understanding is that they don't intubate for a spinal, but you may well also be given sedation to make you drowsy while the surgery is happening.

Good luck...I completely understand your situation, but if your other surgery went well and you know you need this one then it's worth facing the demons and just getting it over with. Will be sending you good thoughts tomorrow.

Hey The way I looked at my mcl surgery was I was ready. 10 months of sitting around in pain I wasnt going to put up with it anymore. If you dont go to surgery you will just complicate things for your heath. Try not to think about it to much or you'll dry yourself crazy.

I hope the fact we haven't heard from you means you managed to grit your teeth and get through it...if so, very much hope that all went well for you.

I did end up going through with it!!! First off I just want to thank everyone from the bottom of my heart for all the support. Everything went great. I was a nervous wreck the day of surgery and they knew as soon as i walked in the door. They were very nice and calming. The surgery went well. I am day three post op....in some pain but managing! I will write a better more detailed entry later....thanks again everyone!

Good for you! Hopefully it feels even better being on the other side given the fears that you had to conquer to get there. I hope I'm as brave as you when my turn comes in two weeks!

Best of luck with your recovery. :)
