Any ideas?
« on: October 02, 2003, 05:41:38 PM »
First of all, hi everyone, first post here, *newbie* glad that bit's over  ;D

Serious question tho, I've been having fairly major pains in my right knee for about 2 years now, and also quite loud grinding noises whenever i kneel down or stand up from kneeling.

During the last two years i've kept having small occurances where i would be walking along and would get a sudden sharp pain in my knee, which would be followed by a feeling of something pressing outwards from the side of my kneecap against the skin, making very little of it at the time i simpley stopped walking for a second till it went away, then carried on.

Sadly though now things have taken a turn for the worse and i have had periods (sometimes upto 6 weeks) where i have to walk around with a sports brace on my knee, as it keeps doing it all the time. Currently it can do it when i simply get up from my office chair and take about 6 steps to the door, then i have to stop and literally put pressure on the side of my knee to put it back into place.

I have to admit, i have never really made anything of this for the simple reason that i have a mortal fear of hospitals and operations, which has always put me off of having anything done, but now I'm starting to realise that at 22 years old i shouldn't have these problems.

The only thing that i can put it down to is that when i was about 10 i was on a school field trip and i tripped and twisted my knee really badly, but nothing ever manifestd itself until i turned about 18, then nothing seriously until i turned 20.

If anyone here has any ideas on what it might be, then I would be fantastically greatful, as i am currently having real problems getting an appointment with a GP to have it checked over.

Stu  :)

Sb-

There are several things that can cause the "grinding" in your knee.  One of which might be articular cartilage damage.  Deffinately see an OS.  If you are not sure which to see, do some research.  Ask friends/co-workers about who they would or would not recomend.  Your knee is a very important part of your body, and to have ongoing problems is not a good thing.

I did have a plica rmoved from the lateral side of my right knee and yes, I could feel it inside my knee right at the knee cap after I sustained an injury.  Never even knew about it until then.

You can find a multitude of helpful information here at this sight and from other areas of the internet, but the best source of info is from a qualified OS.

Along with this bit of info, rely on the kind people here.  They are great and always seem to have very helpful insight and info.  I know I have learned a lot in just the short time I have been stopping in!

I hope you find some answers and resolution to your delima.  Keep us posted!

Thanks, As i said, the worst part of all of this is that i was too stubborn to have anything done 2 years ago when it started. It didn't help that my mother had both her knees operated on pre-keyhole and she has had nothing but problems.

I am hoping to get to see a GP tomorrow, as it is much easier for me to get a referall to a specialist then through them than going directly.

The only other thing that is bothering me is the rehab time for any of this, as I work a fairly important role in the company that employs me, and any time i have off would cause real problems (even though i know that they would not have a problem with me having it done and having time off).

I guess that all in all im just going to have to bite the bullet and go for it, because it is mostly fear and excuses that have made me wait so long already.

Stu-

I understand the fear thing.  But, if you do end up having surgery, then just ask any questions that you feel are important.  Remember, no matter what anyones says, there is no such thing as a "dumb" question.  You have a right to know.

Your OS can give you general information about healing & recovery, and sometimes pre-op excersises to help speed recovery time.  Just take it one step at a time, one day at a time.  I know my OS didn't just jump right into surgery.  He tried a few other things first to rule out a couple of things, and then decided surgery would be the best option.

My Dad is deathly affraid of Docs/needles/hospitals too.  He would rather suffer than go to a Doc, let alone have surgery.  You are not alone.

Hope all goes well.  Let us know what the Gp says!
