6 weeks after TTT and lateral release...
« on: June 08, 2010, 11:00:34 PM »
6 weeks ago I had a tibial tubercle transfer and lateral release and my specialist has given me permission to start bending my knee again. I have been trying to bend it but it is extremely difficult. Does anyone have any tips to make it easier? Also, if anyone else has had this same surgery, how long did it take you to start walking again?

Hi.  PREFACE:  I am not a health care professional, so the following is just my personal experience.  Your OS or PT would be the best source of information for your particular recovery.  I had a TTT and Lateral Release in Aug of 2008.  I was in an immobilizer for about 2 months, with weight bearing starting about 3 weeks after surgery with crutches and a little over a month without crutches.  I did start PT before I was walking without crutches trying to get my range of motion back.  I was using a passive motion machine almost immediately after the surgery.  I had to really push the ROM, though.  I wasn't making great progress at first (it hurt and felt strange on the machine), but once I started to "rock" on the stationary bike the ROM started picking up.  I don't think I would have ever recovered full ROM without the bike - it was non-weightbearing and it gave me a feeling of improvement almost immediately.  You should work with a PT knowledgeable with TTTs.  Also see if your OS has any additional suggestions.  My quad was so atrophied it took me a while to get back to a point where I could walk comfortably.  If you haven't been walking for 6 weeks some of your ROM issues could be caused by a weak quad.  It took nearly 18 months to get the full quad strength back (I also had my hardware removed during that time so I had a couple of extra weeks of not walking).  Has your OS given you leg lifts or other similar exercises to help with leg strength?  That may help, but as always, check with your doc for specific instructions.
