Hand top of kneecap
« on: April 03, 2010, 02:13:48 PM »
If you put your hand on top of your kneecap and flex and extend the leg repeatedly how does your knee feel?

If your knee moves very nicely for the most part but has the occaisional skip or catch is it anything to worry about?

Sorry about the type-O.  It's supposed to be hand on top of kneecap.

Mine feels crunchy, like it's rolling over gravel. That's my good knee. Can't tell you about the bad one, as it's still in a brace.

My left one pops but that's due to suction created by having the retropatellar cartilage being shaved 8 weeks ago, the right one is generally fine

It can be due to weak quads.  I would not worry about it.

I'm working my quads 3 times a day especially the vmo and the pt said my right is a little bit off track.  HJow on earth can that be when I'm constantly working on them and my leg is far more stable than it used to be and the tone of my quads is much better on that leg than it hasbeen for a long time.

Mine is crunchy, grindy, and catches on things, thanks for asking.  ;)

You can have one off track a bit without anything bad happening.  Just keep your muscles strong and balanced and don't obsess about it too much.  Sounds like you're strengthening well.  Continue the good work.

I can proudly say that my bad bad knee (leftie) has the dubious honour of having made one OS flinch when he extended it with his hand over the kneecap. "Oooh you've got some noises going on there haven't you" he said as he ran to the puke bucket. No **** Sherlock, take a look at my MRI and my inability to extend my leg against anything!!!  ::)

So, with Grade 3-4 cartilage lesions under both kneecaps I can create some spectacular cracks, grinds and crunches. Muscle strength failing because of the inability to do some of the require strengthening work doesn't help. Hence the decision to finally get things looked at via scope. I know the assorted loose bits in there also won't be helping.  :o

Unless you're lucky enough to have pristine knecaps (which very few people have in all honesty) you'll get some skips/noises. Keep up the strengthening work, work on balance etc and don't worry about it unless you're functionally compromised!

The good-bad knee has been doing a bit of popping as well, but I'm assured it is on track.   My other one is only slightly off, so I'll keep on with those quad exercises and next time if it still isn't tracking I'll ask him about taping.  I've had taping before my surgery and it got the knee on track very well.

Some people I know who've never had knee issues still ahve the odd bit of skipping.  I probably did but before I hd knee probolems I wasn't constantly examining my knees.

Until a couple of months ago my right knee used to sound like a gun going off when it clicked, but in the last couple of months it hasn't been clicking nearly as loud as it had been.  I still get the odd loud click but they are fewr and further between.  The pt told me that those who follow the McConnel school of thought consider that if the clicking is getting quiter then the quads are sronger.

My knee that was operated actually cracks when I extend it. I used to be able to feel it move and it cracked really loudly, be that has diminished somewhat over the last month. Do this sound bad?
Deeply regret having knee surgery...hoping it can be fixed.

As long as it doesn't sound liek rice crispies or feel like your kneecap is running over gravel then its probably a sign your quads are stronger according to the McConnelschool.

Nah, doesn't sound like that, almost just sound like I'm cracking a knuckle, but I think the kneecap is still sliding a little when it cracks.
