Arthroscopy on both knees simultaneously?
« on: March 25, 2010, 12:26:30 AM »
I need to have a chondroplasty, limited lateral release and synovectomy on both knees.  I'm trying to decide whether or not to have both of them done at the same time or two separate surgeries.

I'm concerned about the recovery if I have both knees done at the same time.

Input is appreciated!!

Hi there,

A few years back I had both knees scoped.  It was not pleasent, but I did manage.  I don't think I would do LR on both at the same time though.  That is my personal preference.  I always have lots of pain with weight bearing after a LR.  So one leg to stand on is what I need.  Recovery takes a bit longer, but not much (for a simple clean up).  It depends on what you have for time off and if you think you can manage both knees being worked on.

Thanks Milly!  Although I'm not having a FULL lateral release, I'm still leaning towards getting one knee done at time.  There are stairs in my house and I'm not sure how I'd manage if I had both done at the same time.

How are your knees doing now?

RE Stairs.
You could sit on the stairs and go up /down one at a time. Place a dining chair at the top of the steps to take your weight when you get there. This also lets you stand up and get your crutches.

The left one is doing great after my PFJR.  The right one will need one too, down the road.  My doc would have done both, but not sure I wanted to do that at once.  It all really depends on how you feel about it.  Stairs are difficult no matter what.  I did have my first two LRs 6 months apart, so you can do them close together.  Good luck to you and keep us posted.

I scheduled surgery for my right knee only on April 30th.  Not only am I concerned about recovery and taking a lot of time off work, I want to see if the surgery even helps before having it done to both knees.  If the surgery helps substantially, I'll schedule the left knee 4-6 months down the road as you had done.

How are you doing with your recovery?

Sounds like a good plan to me.  I am doing well with the left knee.  I am even doing things I had not been able to do for some time before surgery.  I can kneel again (feels odd, but not so so painful I cannot do it).  I actually could squat down as well.  Which I have not been able to do for a few years now (at least not with out falling on my backside).

Keep me posted on how you are doing.

That's great you can do squats without pain!  I haven't been able to do that for about 20 years!  I SO want this next surgery to work.  I can't imagine what it would be like to go up or down stairs or simply bend my knees without being in pain.

It is quite something to be able to do things without as much pain as before.  The left knee feels pretty good, but the right one is heading south fast so it gives me a lot of pain most days.  I will be fixing that one probably later this year or next spring.
