Grade III chondromalacia patellae - cost???
« on: March 30, 2010, 11:59:01 PM »
I was diagnosed with the above subject line after 5 years of being told that I only had patella femoral pain syndrome. Well I am finally relieved having a diagnoses after 5 years of physical therapy that never worked... I am now in the referral process to visit a orthopedic surgeon and then finally surgery.

I was told that a knee cap replacement is the logical way to go. What i am concerned about is that my job is physical... and I lose out on money with the more time spent in a "light duty" position. Being in Canada, I will eventually get through our social health system and have my knee cap replaced. However, I have been told by my family physician that the referral alone to the ortho surgeon is 10-12 months, then he says "yes, you need surgery" at which point I can end up waiting another 3-12 months for that.

Time is money, so I am looking into private surgery be it in Canada or the US. I am having trouble finding quotes on "knee cap" replacement. I am finding countless quotes on knee replacements. My MRI states, and my Dr collaborates, that the surrounding tissues, tendons, and ligaments are normal. So a full knee replacement is not necessary, correct?  I have looked into one private company operating within Canada and have been quoted that a knee replacement would cost me $17-18,000, and a simple knee cap replacement would cost me $13,000.

Questions now... is this an accurate quote? Has anyone gone private on this... in researching I have found that the surgery for a knee replacement is much more complex then a simple knee cap replacement. Why is it still so expensive at $13,000? Or am i getting an unrealistic quote?

Hi there,

I think you are jumping the gun a bit. From what I understand they often don't patella replacements unless it is grade cartilage damage. Your GP is not a specialist in joint related problems, so may be wrong on the types of surgery that are appropriate for your situation.

They can often re-align your knee cap with a procedure such as an osteotomy.

The best advice I can give you is to see a knee surgeon that specialises in patella problems in the top of their field. Once you have done that then you can make a plan.

Get your GP to refer you to a sports med physician who will be able to point you in the right direction. If you are in Vancouver there is a good sports physician I know of that is Australian trained.
