Cost of PRP injections.. Who, Where and How Much?
« on: January 17, 2010, 04:23:13 AM »
Hi All

Since I am getting some PRP injections for my knee condition, I thought I 'd share that I am paying about $800.00/ injection in Los Angeles, I am getting these thru the Kerlan Jobe clinic in Culver City.

Does any one else have PRP experience in Los Angeles or else where?

I live in NY but am getting treatment in NJ. They cost from $500-650.

I've been told by a few doctors now that insurance coverage is in the near future.

I had a PRP done at the hospital for special surgery to try to by time before surgery, but unfortunately, it did not work for me. Total cost for mine, with the use of the ultra sound machine, and the dr copay was $1500, The surgeons office tried to get insurence to cover it by saying we were in fact trying to save them money in the long run, but the didn't buy it. Apparently it is still considered experimental, which basically sucks! I hope you had better luck than I did!

I asked prior to getting the injections how much it would cost if insurance didn't pick up the tab. I was told $800 / shot after discussions with the admin folks at the practice. In the end the insurance company picked up the tab. The whole payment gig with healthcare is totally screwed up. I paid $350 multiple times for an MRI for my left knee. When my insurance was picking up the tab my co-pay was $ 450.00 .. This whole thing is so screwed up it defies belief..

In NJ I have been charged $500-600 per knee for PRP (but also managed a package of hip + knee for $1050 that included some prolo as well).

In NYC, I was quoted $700-800 per knee.

Hey Ashok -- where in India did you find such a good price?  Also, not sure if you've been getting my PMs, but I was wondering how well the cytotron ended up working for you...?

Hi there. I saw your post about the PRP being well worth it. I was just told today that I could go that route for my tennis elbow.
Please can you tell me about your experience with PRP. Was it for your knee? If not, where? And did the shot alone help or did you do other therapies/physio after? Did it hurt? I'm not a woos bit I like to know pain levels. I've been suffering with the bloody tennis elbow for over 8 mths.
Anything you can tell me, would be most appreciated.
Thanks a lot!

I had ultrasound-guided prp for tennis elbow, similarly after around 10 months with the condition. I had previously had steroid which offered temporary relief for a few months, then the prp. Unfortunately it didn't help me at all, and I won't lie but the injection was extremely painful.  No anaesthetic can be used as it kills the plasma cells.

I unfortunately ended up having a tennis elbow release a couple of months later. My tendon was very poorly, just about attached and after the op, the surgeon said that nothing non surgical would have helped, it needed to be repaired.

The surgeon does have good results with prp, about 90%, indeed he had it himself and no trouble since. I assume you are resting the elbow, using a tennis elbow support and having physio?

Certainly try it, as the pain after surgery was horrible and the rehab has been long and slow, a year on, I am still not 100%.

Good luck, tennis elbow is a rubbish condition once it becomes chronic!

The injection didn't cost me anything as I have private health insurance - it would be around 600-700 otherwise I believe (in UK)

I would also be interested where in India these 8000 Rupees PRP Knee injections are available.

Knee PRP injections using good quality centrifuge are at least 20,000 Rupees in Bangalore.

Hi Ashok,
I am new to this forum and I am looking for success cases on Stem Cells, Prolotherapy and PRP. I've read all your story and would like to know if you really saw improvement after last October, last time you posted something.
Please let me know how you feel now. My doctor wants to go for surgery and says there is no alternative treatments for my meniscus tear, but it is not a "difficult case"I guess, so I still have hope in finding a different solution.
I am in London, just you case you have any recommendations around my area.
Thank you.
Luciana

Ashok_Guru is based in the USA I believe

In the UK (I am assuming London, UK here not Ontario?), there are no recognised mainstream stem cell treatments available, nor prolotherapy.  Some specialists use PRP, but more for tendon injuries.  Usually once the meniscus is torn, it's torn (although some may heal if small and in the limited part with a blood supply) and you can either have the torn bit trimmed /removed, possibly repaired (depending on your age, size of tear, location of tear) or you can live with it (possibly if pain is the only symptom and nothing mechanical like locking, buckling)

You may find some sort of trial, your surgeon may know (is he a knee specialist?).  Ian McDermott in London has an interest in the meniscus but only has a private practice.

http://www.sportsortho.co.uk/our-specialists/mr-ian-mcdermott

His practice offers PRP for tendons  http://www.sportsortho.co.uk/left-navigation/treatments/non-surgical/tendon-injections

PRP is expensive in the UK as only offered privately in almost all cases (probably 500+)

Unless you wish to travel to Eastern Europe, India etc (but you'll probably need multiple injections to get any benefit in reality, if you get any benefit at all)

Good luck :)

Not so sure about this part Vickster... my medial meniscus tear was given me hell (pain, catching and all that jazz). It was in the anterior horn (not vascularized) and I haven't felt anything there for a long time after PRP and stem cells. It's nothing more than anecdotal evidence... I know, but I personally got convinced...

About the original OP, I don't think you will find anything in UK for this at a reasonable price. But if you can afford the prices Vickster mention above there is hope, not necessarily guarantees of healing...

Did the PRP reduce the inflammation though, rather than heal the tear? What does the imaging show  You've had lots of injections, At 500 a time it'll get very expensive, and I doubt any UK specialist would give a dozen jabs under any circumstance for a meniscus tear.  Conservative bunch here and not driven by money unlike in some countries :)

I'd discuss with a meniscus specialist as I said as not every hospital will even have access to the equipment.n I don't think there is any stem cell therapy nor prolotherapy available to buy in the UK, possibly in a trial

It's a possibility... although the catching has stopped. Often under certain movements a flap would catch (painfully) and I had to do a manual move to release it and get it back in place. Anti-inflammatory or not, all I know is that I can walk for 90 minutes without any pain. Before I had pain going to the bathroom... But it's all 1 case anecdotal evidence... no arguments about that.

I will do an MRI 1 year post beginning of treatments, which will be next December... Until then no proof...

How many injections did you need to that point to give the OP some idea of potential benefit vs cost (not that I think any uk surgeon would be willing to give multiple injections without prior clinical proof and experience)

My meniscus tears seem to be behaving, but as horizontal ones, they can often be left in peace.  Maybe the hyaluronic acid has lubricated and calmed everything enough
