Finally got a date for surgery
« on: January 12, 2010, 09:44:38 PM »
:D  Well almost a yr has come and gone. Several appts with GP and knee specialist.  11 months of waiting is finally coming to an end.

I have filled out all the forms, signed the consent and am finally having my knee surgery on Feb 3rd.

I thought I would be glad that I finally got a date.  But find that all I am is stressed and worried.   Hopeing I have made the right decision and that when all is said and done I will be glad I went through with it.

I felt just the same when I got the date for my TTT. I was told in February that my surgery was in March and I did get myself wound up as I wasnt looking forward to staying in hospital and was a bit apprehensive as it was more than I had ever had done before.

But I got the date just before christmas for my TTT on my other leg which is in 05/02/10, but because I have now been there and done that I feel more relaxed this time around.

What you are feeling is normal, good luck with your surgery.

I am having the meniscus trimmed/repaired, debridment , ACL reconstructed and a TTT.

REALLY nervous about it.  Was not expecting the TTT right now but I think getting it all done in one shot is better in the long run then having it done later.

We are not addressing the issue of the flat trochlear groove right now.  And I am not sure I will ever do anything about that.

You are doing the right thing having it all done at once in my opinion, I have asked my OS to remove the screws from my TTT on my RK while he is doing the TTT/Arthroscopy on my LK.

My OS had said to me that I may need an op on my Trochlear Groove if the TTT had not been successful, but so far so good. So it maybe that the OS will see how you get on with this surgery.

MedicMom, I am still getting used to the lingo, but it looked like that was a list of injuries and/or diagnoses in your signature. Does that mean this is your first knee surgery? I am just wondering because my experience was similar to that of ipswich. I was so worked up before my first one that I freaked out and wept in the pre--op area. For the second, I had butterflies, but I was calm and committed. I just scheduled my third and I am actually kind of happy about it.  ;)

Hi Cricket.  Yes this is my first knee surgery and I'm terrified.  And have heard that and read that you're not always better off after the surgery. I have had the "butterflies" in my tummy since last Mon when the OS called and gave me the date.

I've even looked at video's on youtube (probably shouldn't have) and that just escalated my fear.  The surgery looks so brutal.

Good luck with your next surgery, hope all goes well .

Ipswich...good luck with yours as well.  Glad you have had a positive experience so far.

Definitely shouldn't have looked at the videos!   :o

I just hoped it could be some comfort that people can become very confident and relaxed once they have been through it.

It certainly can be worrying when your going to have surgery.  I was,  my mris were useless and I didn't even know what was wrong with me until the OS told me what he'd found.  All I knew before i had the scope was, my knee had been terrible for 18 months and no-one (gps and pts) was taking me seriously.  It was fear of the unknown for me, I kept thinking the OS would find serious OA and it would get worse and worse until I couldn't move.  I had a gret OS and he fixed my knee up well, but the re-hab has been hard, really hard.  If I have to have another I will remember, the op is the easy part; it is all about the re-hab.

With a bit of look I'll e alright but when I don't know.

I've looked at loads of videos on youtube, but I havn't had the stomach to watch my own for fear of what the cartliage looks like.

Yeah, I do regret having watched the video's now.  Had originally thought it would better going in there actually seeing what was going to be done to me.  NOT!!

It is good to know that so many others on this board have been there, done that and had very good results.  I am  really hoping for a good outcome and that this will be my one and only surgery .

A whole yr of waiting and doc's appts and I come down with a bloody cold 2 wks before surgery...sigh

Now I'm afraid to get my pre op blood work done because I'm afraid they'll cancel the surgery.  Really don't want that. Want to get it done and over with.

That's annoying, but if you can get rid of it quick you should be alright.  I remember when I had my op I was worried about getting swine flu.  I think I had the reminents of a cold when I went for the blood test, but I kept it quiet.

I am the same, my boyfriend is now coming down with man flu, but I am worried that he may pass it on to me. That is the problem with surgery this time of year.

The Ipswich hospital has also had outbreaks of the winter vomiting bug on 2 wards and have been banning any visitors to prevent it spreading, hasn't affected the ward I am due to go into just yet though.

Surgery went well as far as I know.  I have not had the chance to talk with my OS since surgery.  The first chance to speak with him about it will be in 2wks when I go for my follow up at the fracture clinic.

He put a nerve block in my knee following surgery which worked very well until about 6am the day after surgery.  The pain as been incredible and the T3's he sent me home with dont do anything other then take the edge off.  The certainly don't get rid of the pain.  I am going to call his office this morning and ask them to have him call in something stronger.  As long as I'm laying still and dont move my leg its tolerable.  Even something as simple as lifting my leg causes a huge amount of pain and is almost impossible for me to do right now.  My knee is about twice its normal size , my entire leg is swollen, includinng my foot.  I have 0 ROM , I'm not able to bend it at all, but its only the beginning of my 2nd post op day

I've been laying in bed since I came home.  Sleeping on and off.  Icing and elevating my leg pretty much around the clock.  I'm still having some bleeding.  Not sure if that is normal but hoping it will stop today.

Thanks for asking
