Why do I see a drill bit in my x-ray?
« on: December 22, 2009, 11:03:21 PM »
SHOULD THERE STILL BE A DRILL BIT IN MY LEG following a high tibial osteotomy?  Is it normal procedure to insert and leave a drill bit, along with the screws and the plate?  It looks EXACTLY like a drill bit.  Is there something else they could have used that looks unmistakably like a drill bit?

Are you sure it's not just a type of screw or pin (maybe a guide pin) that you are seeing?  I highly doubt any OS would leave a drill bit behind.

I doubt its a drill bit, its probably just the screw (if its a headless screw it will look like a drill bit). Has your OS seen the x-rays yet? You should call him to see what he thinks, I highly doubt that he left a drill bit in your knee though. In order for a surgeon to leave a drill bit in your leg it would have to go unnoticed by the surgeon, the OR nurse, the surgeon's 1st assistant, and any possible resident observers of the surgery, plus they would wonder why they were missing a drill bit.
-Left knee history-
Oct 06- injured knee, MRI shows torn meniscus, no action
June 09- knee begins popping, MRI shows large OCD lesion
Aug 09- OCD lesion removed, microfracture surgery, partial meniscectomy
Jan 19- biopsy for MACI, partial meniscectomy
Apr 19- MACI implantantion, meniscus allograft

I would ask .But I have a broken screw that the OS said would not cause any problem left in but it would have been a problem to remove. It is in the fibula about a half inch long it's been there since 2006 I only know its there when I see the xray.
