Arthroscopy scars
« on: November 14, 2009, 11:55:49 AM »
My arthroscopy was nearly 15 weeks ago and the the scars are still very visible, especially the one on the inside of the knee which is like a line.

How long is it before they are no longer visible?

Also, if you have to have aniother scope on the same knee are the old scars opened up or does the surgeon make new holes?

BTW, I'm walking quite well now and there's very little swelling left.

I've had 2 arthroscopy's and I have different incisions for each of them.

I can't quite remember how long it took for the scars to fade, it did take a little while though, then my scars from my TTT still haven't faded and I had that surgery in March.

I have scars that are nearly two years old and they still have not faded.  Everyones skin will fade at a different spped based on a lot of factors.  My skin is incredibly pale.

Scars will generally be used again if they can be.

Try not to worry too much about the scope scars.  They are probably not as noticable as you think.

Some scars don't fade. I think they fade until something like 18 months, and that's when they'll stay like that for life. If you're worried, try bio oil to heal them.

I'm not particularly worried, I just wanted a general idea.

After the op the left 9inner) scar healed up very quickly but the right (outer) scar took a little longer to seal up.  After 2 weeks my os said I was ok to bath exercise in the pool so no problem there.

The only concern is that I've been using Diclofenac gel (Volterol) rather than taking the stuff in tablet for (because it makes me feel sick and I'm worried about stomach ulcers).  The instructions of the Volterol say not to use on broken skin, so at first I applied the gel whilst trying not to get any on the cuts.  I now put it all over the knee and havn't had any problems yet but I'm still not sure if it is a good idea iin the long run.

Also, I've been told I would experience hypersensibility under the scars as the nerves are repaired, how long does this usually last?

Interestingly, the scar from my ACLr is still sensitive, but the ones from the 4 menisectomies aren't. I'm not sure how long it took for that feeling to fade.

Re the gel, it should be ok. Scars, as opposed to scabs, are a skin cover so there shouldn't be any worries about it getting into your bloodstream or anything. I use Nurofen gel on my knee and I haven't had any problems.

I have never heard anything about a timeline for how long it takes for scars to fade.  I have wondered if they would fade only up to a certain point and then stop.  I have scars on my knees that are still as red/purplish as they were at 6 months post-op and its been two years now.  I really do not mind the scars, but I do get sick of people asking what happened to my knees. (3 highly visable scars on each knee do kind of stand out.)

My scars never went away and I had my first scope 21 years ago.
I have had a total of 5 scopes on my knees and only the last one the scars are different, all the other surgeries where done by right handed surgeons my new surgeon is left handed so the longer scar is on the opposite side.
I'm so busy that I'm not sure if I lost my horse or just found my lead rope.

I'm not two concerned about the look of the scarsjust as to wether it was OK to put the gel on them and of course a general idea of what to expect. But really a couple of scars is nothing as long as everything is ok inside. (I hope)

Anyway, thanks for all the replies.  They are very much appreciated.

It's very strange, but after week on week of my scars looking the same, they got a lot smaller over the last few days and now there's not much left of them.

That's a lot like my recovery in general: week upon week I improve very slowll and then all of a sudden I can walk with only a very small limp.

So thanks for the advice.
