Kneecap fracture help!
« on: November 10, 2009, 05:11:14 AM »
I am 21 years old and i fractured my right patella vertically on december of 2008. I had surgery on dec 20th, and i had 3 screws put in. I was in an immobolizer for months and did PT for months. Now it is Nov of 2009 and my knee is not where i want it to be. When i kneel down on that knee, i have to really push to get my butt to touch the back of my right calf. Otherwise comfortably i can get maybe 170 degrees of bend comfortably. I still have pain on the medial side of my kneecap, although its strange that my fracture was on the lateral side. I have some distinct crepatis, as in grinding and popping noises when i move the joint up and down. The joint overall still feels weak and i am unsatisfied with the results. I swim twice a week and try to do as much home therapy as i can but its just not feeling the same. If i sit up from a sitting position with that leg it hurts. WHAT SHOULD I DO?? Went to see the doctor, he said taking out the screws wont do much and neither will doing arthroscopy to take out debris and rough cartilage. will lateral release surgery help? do i need more time? Im scheduling an appointment w/ another orthopaedic doctor to get a second opinion. But frankly, im VERY worried. Please help!!!!!

Hi there,

I would definitely be getting another opinion, particularly from a PFJ specialist. A lateral release is unlikely to help. It sounds like the screws are the problem.

How did you fracture your knee cap ? I am beginning to wonder if I did as I am in sooooooo much pain. Am due to have surgery for patella instability in February next year.

hi there!

its soo good to know this forum thing works as i am very new! Yea so i fractured it dancing. and i slipped and fell down on hard wood floor. although i had some pain and couldnt walk. it wasnt terribly bad strangely enough. anyway i got the surgery 2 weeks later. I am scheduling now an appointment with an OS who use to work with the ST. Louis Rams, hes young but i hope he'll give me a better answer. Im still having pain and i cant run as much as i use to. and its almost been a year. is this normal?
