shattered patella and general P.T. time frame?
« on: October 23, 2009, 08:41:08 PM »
Hi all,
New to the board so I will try to be brief.
Slipped and broke patella 8-26-09, surgery 8-27-09 (2 pins and some wire).
I was immobilized and am now in an adjustable brace at 45 degrees.
The knee still gives out on occasion and my job requires quite a bit of walking (WC right now).
Is this adjustable brace part of P.T.?
I once had shoulder surgery and remember a lot of P.T. which was no fun.
How long before real P.T. begins?
And how much P.T. is generally needed (time)?
I'll deal with the discomfort but I was an active person and want to stay that way. I would also like to stay employed where I am but also do not want to return too soon at the expense of knee health.
any help is appreciated.
please respond
thanks
ray

I was in PT the week after surgery and had 20 sessions, first 3 x/week, then 2 x/week, then 1x/week.  Some was in the pool which helped me walk and then I practiced in a community pool.  Some electrical stimulation to get the muscle memory back and a lot of exercises that helped with strengthening.  I took ibuprufen before sometimes but found it all very helpful.  Wish I'd done some additional PT beyond the 20 but that was all the insurance covered without extensive explanation of why more was needed.  Tried to practice the lessons on my own and was back on the tennis courts 6-8 months after the fracture - not at the previous level but back with people having fun together.
