My Scope & the road to ACI...
« on: October 19, 2009, 12:11:38 AM »
I'm sitting here recovering from the cart. biopsy, and figured this would be a good time to start one of these! I had the biopsy with Dr. Gomoll on Wed, Oct. 14th.  He also took out some scar tissue while he was in there.  It was the easiest, quickest, and the least painful surgery so far!  :)

So far I am completely impressed with Dr. Gomoll and his staff.  ;D  This was my first procedure with him.  It was done at Brigham & Womens in Foxboro at Patriot Place!  When I woke up Dr. Gomoll told me he took some scar tissue, and the biopsy.  He said my knee was like jello inside, and fell apart when touched.  Not to sure what that means.  ??? I have my follow up in two weeks, where he said we'll go over pictures, and the game plan.

My goal/plan is to go in for the ACI around January.  We'll see what he says in 2 weeks!

Good luck Murph,

It was mentioned for me to have ACI, but my surgeon told me I was not a good candidate due to the amount of damage...Your is like jello, makes me feel alot better. :-[.......Sounds like you have a good team around ya, and hopefully this will get you on the road to recovery.

Murph, Good luck to ya.  I have my ACI scheduled for Nov. 18th.  I actually have until Monday to change my mind. :-\  I've been  on the fence for the last few months, so we'll see.

danthp, how bad are your defects? Any idea the size of them?

AJ,

My defects were failry substanial...My patella from lateral to medial facets has been completely compromised...When asking my surgeon, he said that the damage is so severe their really is nothing to graft anything suitabally onto with regards to my knee cap...Additionally I have very little good cartildge left....Said I am poor candidate for this and due to other issues....I have another OS visit with a new doc soon, but we will be discussing patellofemoral replacement...Ah yes the joys of being 31..

Happy 2010!

I am feeling pretty good, guess I cant complain to much.  I am now at the four week mark and all seems to be going as expected.
I am brace free and working towards loosing the crutches in the next 2 weeks.  I am partial WB, the partial amount varies from day to day depending on how the the knee is feeling.
I am in PT 3 times a week trying to gain strength back, especially in my quad.  I am not to extend past 30 degree bend with weight, so keeping that in mind every time I move.  I still have daily aches/pains but that is due to trying to gain my ROM back.  I reached 105 degrees yesterday.

Dr. Jack Farr did my ACI here in Indianapolis at his Cartilage restoration surgery center.

Now it is just day to day exercises and remembering this is the part of recovery/rehab that just takes time ... its a long road back!

hope all goes well .. take care !

Hope everything went well today for you Murph.  Keep us posted on your recovery.  The one thing I didn't ask about is hospital time.  Do they normally keep you over night for this procedure or is it outpatient?
Injury with knee hitting concrete 7/07, partially torn ACL, and cartilage damage
Scope and debridement 2/08
2nd scope 1/10 with carticel biopsy
Carticel implant surgery on 11/8/10

I all comes down to the OS.  Some will keep you for two or three days while others will be out patient.  Mine was out patient.  Arrived at 9am had aci and amz around noon and was in the car heading home(4hr drive) around 4pm.  I didn't think it was a big deal going home the same day...it was actually nice to be home once the surgery meds wore off.

Hi, Murph.  Hope your surgery today was a rousing success!  Keep us posted when you feel up to it.

Room 101

Melissa, like AJS I was an out patient procedure and thankful to be home.  I even made it up to the second floor to bed the same night.  Each day I did one trip down the stairs in the morning and one trip up at night.  There's nothing like the comfort of home... but I also had good help with my husband & Mom taking care of things.

I am 3 weeks out and everything is going well.  I had my first follow up a week ago.  He told me to increase the CPM machine, I can start getting off the crutches (whenever I feel up to it), and to stay in the brace.  Not much else to report.  I am taking less pills & feeling pretty good.  I have good and bad days, but happy to say that their are far more good then bad!  I don't go back to the Dr. until March 4th.  In the meantime they want me to focus on bending it.  I need to be able to have it hang while I sit on the edge of the bed and get it to 90 degrees.  I'm only at about 70 now.  But, I wasn't much better with that before the surgery.  I lost a ton of ROM after my last surgery so I don't think that has anything to do with this one.  Thats about it for now :)
