Popping
« on: October 14, 2009, 05:44:31 PM »
I had ACL reconstruction on 9/4/09.  I had LOA and MUA on 9/29. (seems I heal REALLY fast and scar tissue that would normally build up in 3 - 4 months built up in 3 - 4 days).

I am doing good in my rehab.  Slowly improving (hate that it's so slow, but I have to learn patience!)

Lately (within the past 5 days or so) when I extend my leg, it feels like my patella is "popping".  Like it gets stuck and then pops past that stuck point.  There's no pain associated with it, just the popping feeling.  I was wondering if this is something that should be looked into?  Or is this "normal" healing process?

I've never had an ACL recon so cannot speak to that so much, but I have read that kneecap issues can occur afterwards.  Have your doc check it out.

Lisa,

I also had the patella "popping back into place", but mine occurred during flexion, not extension. Turned out to be that my kneecap wasn't tracking correctly in the trochlear groove because I hadn't built up enough strength in my VMO (quad muscle).  As the strength improved that maltracking issue disappeared.

Unless the popping is painful, I would give it some more time.  Keep up on your quad work and it should resolve itself.
