Supartz, ROund 3, but Round 1 for left knee
« on: October 06, 2009, 03:56:43 AM »
I've had 5 knee surgeries (see my signature). The last one was just over a year ago, a partial knee replacement, medial section of my right knee. Now my left knee, which has had surgeries too, is acting up. I had a cortisone shot in it last Thursday  (the 1st time this knee ever had a shot) after it had been swelling and hurting the previous week. I am now scheduled to have a round of Supartz in it, scheduled to start Oct. 28. I've had 2 previous rounds in my other knee, the one that is now replaced. It never worked on that knee, probably because the arthritis was already too bad. Hoping it may work on this other knee which I don't think is in as bad condition as the other knee was when it had its shots. Fingers crossed it works. If it doesn't, I won't bother trying it again.

I might say here too that most of the Supartz shots I've had have hurt when they've been done, partly, I'm sure, because some of them were done in the area where my bone on bone arthritis was (in the area where I now have my Oxford knee).

Meanwhile, I now have hip arthritis, 50% of the cartilage is gone (plus what is left has a defect in it) on my left hip. The PA in the rheumatologist office I go to tells me some doctors are using Supartz off label for hips and shoulders but I don't think I'll do it.

Caroline - Hope the Supartz helps! I am not so sure I would want an injection in my knee either.

Thanks, Milly! I'm hoping they'll work. I won't be shocked if they don't, but who knows!
I am probably looking in the near future to a hip replacement, possibly hip resurfacing which is like a partial knee replacement but for hips! We'll see. I'm very happy because yesterday I found online a web site for people thinking about or having had hip replacements. Very similar to Knee Geeks. I was going to explore it this afternoon but we ended up with a 5 hour power failure due to high winds causing power lines to come down.

Caroline,

Glad you find a site for hip sufferers.  I hope they are as supportive a bunch as I have found here.  I just re-read my last post.  I ment to say I would not want an injection to the hip either.  Geez!  Wonder where my brain was.

I did get a cortisone shot in my hip---it requires getting it done at a hospital or an office that has a monitor because it has to be visually guided, unlike a knee cortisone shot. I had it done at my local hospital. I was in street clothes with my shoes on on a hospital gurney/bed and the radiologist (that's who does them, not an ortho) and his assistant were all dressed up in surgical garb!
I'm hoping they're as supportive at the hip one as they are here. Time will tell!

I would guess it would have to be ultra sound guided or something.  Seems like a tricky spot to be shooting anything in.  Good luck with the other board.
