Hi Eagle,

So sorry to hear what you are going through. There is nothing worse than fragmented treatment. That was happening to me for a while until I started seeing my sports physician.

I've had a lot of joint problems including both knees, both shoulders, back and left ankle over a 15 year period. I started seeing my sports physician about 7 years ago and has made a massive difference. He understands my joint problems much better and only refers to the best people, including my knee surgeon. In the US I think they are often referred to as physiatrists. You need to find one that takes a holistic approach. The people with surgeons is they only know how to operate.

I have found clinical Pilates to be the main thing that has really helped me. There is just so much I can do and has really helped with my balance, muscles around my knee, hip and hamstrings which are all important for knee stability.

As I have said on another post I think that pain management is often a cop out unless you have RSD.

My physio tells me that exercise is one of the best ways of dealing with chronic pain and de-sensitising the body.

Good luck !!!

Again thanks for the encouragement.  My leg journey hasn't been as long as some but both knees certainly have played a huge part for a long time.  Forgive me but what is a sports physician?  You said you thought they were called physiatrist ?  How do I even look one up?  I'm willing to try.

I haven't tried any pilates - I do have a routine that I do, as it were.  Again I'm willing to try.  I know that my core muscles just aren't' what they once were.  I walked myself into two bad knee / legs loosing weight.  Now the irony is I can't walk so the weight is coming back, and it sickens me.  I worked too damned hard to have this weight back - besides it being hard on the knees.

I am down to two gabapentin daily now.  My both is having some trouble adjusting  but I'll get there.  As for the pain patches well I just don't know.  The first day was ok, however yesterday wasn't so good.  And then last night definitely wasn't good.  This morning I"ve not put it on yet but well.  I figure it won't hurt and if it helps at all that would be fine with me.  The knee is screaming right now.

Going to try to do some research here - thanks again.  eagle

Hi Eagle,

Sorry about all the problems.  At least your GP is willing to listen.  I certainly hope you can find someone to help you sort this out.  I know my pain is crazy sometimes and I almost wish I could denevate the darn kneecaps.  A bit drastic I guess, but I am also to the point were they can take the darn things and keep em.  I understand the weight thing.  I was doing so well, but seemed to have gained a bit more.  Not sure if medicine related or not, but hard to get rid of when it hurts to walk etc.  So frusterating isn't it?  Even in the Arthritis Today magazine they suggest walking to keep off weight.  I keep thinking well what about us folks that find walking painful at best?  If I find something that works, will let you know.  I have been thinking of trying Pilates, but cannot afford the cost of a class to learn to do it right.  I will pray for you to feel better.  Positive energy heading your way.

Well, I'm off the gabapentin totally.  I think it did work some, but not as I'd expected.  And I'll admit I wasn't willing to up the dosage because of the weight side effects.  I know it works wonders for some but not so much for me.

As far as I'm concerned the verdict is still out on the pain patches.  I do think they help "some" but again not totally.  And I didn't expect them to.  I'm just doing home pt and its going well.  I have my routine down and don't mind doing it too much.  A question I have though is if the knee / leg are really hurting am I to do pt?  Each os / pt / md has their own opinion on that one I know.  Personally I work through it (half-hearted)  and simply am cranky afterwards!  How stupid is that?  I will say I'm noticing my quads seem tighter for whatever reason.  I'm not up to taking a nice slow easy walk yet - too scard of the end results.  Heck a big shopping and the leg is screaming I'm not ready for a walk, I don't think.

I still feel as though I'm not on the right track with this but at least I'm doing something.  Just wish I knew (as many of you do) where to turn.  I am going to look into Pilates - I think our city reck center offers them, if I remember correctly.  eagle

Another chapter in the journey.  The gp called and wondered if I'd ever had a dexacan?  Its to scan and get a baseline as to bone density.  I'd not had one so he scheduled it for the next day and since it was ordered as a prescription all I paid was my co-pay.  He just called with the results and this might be another factor in this knee /leg.  I have osteopenia - mild thinning of the bones.  He has prescribing some over the counter meds to take.  Does this solve anything, no.  Will it possibly help to heal slightly, possibly. Will it help to build bone so maybe this won't happen again, possibly.  Just a little different way to look at things.

Sorry I guess I should have said.  Citracal plus Bone Density builder 2 tablets in morning and 2 night.  He'll recheck me in 6 months if the Citracal doesn't work then he'll put me on Fosteum a soy based product.  We'll see.

Hi, The reason I asked is because I was recently diagnosed with the same thing.  The orthopod didn't offer any suggestions for improvement.  Somehow, that doesn't come as a huge surprise.

Hey Eagle,

I hope the Citracal works out for you.  Could the osteopenia be a part of your pain issues?  Just wondering.

Take care,
Milly

hey eagle. I have  earl onset osteopenia as well  ( 42 yrs old) and am on the fifth fracture/break  december 2006 making a total of 14 bone fracture/breaks in my life. However, my gen phys put me on fosomax - d in addition to calicum supplements. But one thing they fail to tell you is you need magnesium and vit D in order for your body to absorb the calcium...calcium depletes magnesium and without magnesium your body cannot absorb the calcium...catch 22...sooo to make a long story short a diet rich in magnesium: almonds, spinach,, brocoli, halibut, tuna, and certain chocolate products that use cocoa powder as the primary source of chocolate like chocolate instant breakfats powders. choc is high in magnesium but all the sugar can actually interfere with the bodies absorption of calcium as can coffee and soda including diet.  Also 15 minutes of sunshine daily is the BEST source of vitamin D for best absorption.there is alot more involved than just taking calcium supplements... your body has to be primed for it to absorb everything right. in some cases malabsorption comes into play like some have thought I may have.sorry no one educated me before this year! coulda avoided alot of painful fractures!
In fact I just twisted my ankle last wednesday and fractured my fibula at my ankle..people roll thier ankles all the time but when your bones r thin a simple roll, twist, fall can produce painful fractures so I am back in the wheelchair and taken a huge step backwards...please tell your dr you want more education on this subject. Ps as a side note some antis seizure meds can thin the bones ..they commonly use those for RSDS pain...you may want to ask if the one they had you on  has that particualr side effect..  of course  being post menopausal, genetics,, periods of immobility, other meds like corticosteroids  etc also attribute to osteo so like I said its alot of info and education with this. check into it more.as soon as I heal from fracture # 14 I am really checking all this out more and finding a specialist, etc. keep ya posted..thats 6-8 weeks away! ::)

Eaglemom, I hope you are doing much better than you were a few months back. My knee problem I had back in February is NOTHING compared to what y'all are going through.  At the time, I though OMG! My knee is swollen, I can't bend it and I can't walk.  Well, I come in here and read the posts and I hope to God y'all find relief and be better. I live in Austin, Tx by the way and my MD fixed my knee with one visit. I didn't go to a specialist or anything like that.  A brace and the RICE method fixed me up but I am very careful as to what I do when I have to use my knee in a certain way.  I still feel something in my knee but its very minor.  I've noticed that I can't do certain things without feeling something so I avoid many things like reaching under something and putting my weight on my knees. I pray everyone here gets their problems resolved or at least relief.  God Bless!
