Who is the best knee surgeon in London!?
« on: July 28, 2009, 07:49:26 PM »
Hi, I need to find a knee surgeon as I am probably going to need a knee reconstruction. I had an ACL reconstruction 10 years ago and two arthroscopy operations since then. The Doctor I had a check up with thinks it needs another reconstruction. But he doesn't really know any knee surgeon better than any others.

I'm very worried about something going wrong and I don't know any surgeons in London (first was in Australia, second and third in USA).

My internet searches suggest King Edward VII hospital apparently has the best knee surgeons and Harley Street. But nothing I can find is definitive! ???

Any help or advice on very reliable doctors would be much appreciated.  ;)
Best regards,

Hi there,

Andy Williams is meant to be the best in London. Jonathon Lavelle is meant to be very good too. They both work at the Wellington Hospital. Think they both work through the NHS as well.

Jonathan Bell at Parkside Hospital is meant to be good too. Think he works through the NHS as well.

Hope this helps.

Mr Dominic Spicer did my ACLr at London Bridge Hospital in January 2005.  He is on the list of recommended surgeons on this website and he specialises in revisions so he may be worth contacting.

Hi, anybody who might be out there and who might actually see this ....

came across this posting when I was googling the other evening ....

for what it's worth, both me and my girlfriend have both have knee problems (way too many knee problems). I've seen a few different knee surgoens in London - unfortunately !

If you really do want a really good knee surgeon, then I can strongly recommend my knee surgeon - Mr Ian McDermott. I found Mr McDermott via the internet --- in a group called Sports Orthopaedics UK. His CV shows that he's done loads and loads of things, including heaps of research and he sits on various top committees etc. I saw him in clinic and he spent ages with me and explained things in loads of detail - completely unlike (and far better) than any of the other guys that I've ever seen. He's the only surgeon I've seen who actually explains things properly, in terms that you can actually understand (!!) and who takes the time to actually listen properly.

I had some really complicated work done --- a revision ACL reconstruction ('cos the first one wasn't put in in the right place !!), and a meniscal transplantation, because my cartilages had been chopped away several times by previous surgeons ! Thankfully, I'm now doing pretty well, considering all the previous hassle I've had.

I was so happy with Mr McDermott that when my girlfriend recently damaged her knee skiing (a cartilage tear), I took her to see him too.

So, in MY opinion, my surgeon - Ian McDermott - is actually the best knee surgeon in London !!

Mr Richard Viilar who also works at the Wellinghton Hospital is also another excellent OS and saw him twice on BBC News as he been helping out operating on patients in Haiti after the earthquake last month.
