Unexplained ongoing knee swelling -- SO FRUSTRATED!!
« on: July 27, 2009, 07:32:07 PM »
I am a 37-yr-old female.  A year ago this past May I developed swelling out of the blue in my right knee.  One week prior I had tripped up the steps, with no immediate swelling, & I thought perhaps this was a delayed reaction to that?  It went away.  I was into jogging for exercise & resumed activities for a while with no reaction.  Then it swelled again two weeks later.  I went to the dr., normal MRIs, normal x-rays -- he decided on arthroscopy because of clicking & give-way weakness.  He cleaned my knee out last Sept., found some fragments but nothing else really.  As soon as the swelling went down from surgery, I was back to the intermittent swelling here & there.  No improvement from surgery.  Here I am a year later with the same thing going on.  Throughout this past year, I have kept careful note of when the swelling occurs & have found it to be only when my knee is kneeled on or bent (not slight bending -- bent like a squat or sitting indian style).  I jog for exercise & do the elliptical machine & that does not cause the swelling.  When the knee does swell, the swelling is mainly above my kneecap, like a big softball at the base of my thigh (outer right of kneecap).  Also when the knee does swell, it is just tight -- not painful.  My knee gives way & locks when it is swollen, only when swollen.  When I am very mindful of keep the knee relatively straight & not kneeling on it, I can go weeks with no swelling.  If I try to do squats or if I kneel on it for some reason (crawling to the back of the car to hand out chicken nuggets on trips...) then the swelling occurs.
Ok, so if you are still reading after that long long synopsis of my year & if you have ANY idea of what is going on with me or any similar situations I would love to hear about it.  My ortho doesn't seem to know what it could be.  He says everything looks fine & it's unexplained.  I am too young to let this go on, even though I've tried to ignore it for a year now.  I so long to be the runner I used to be & to be able to run & play with my kids!!!!  Thanks for any help or guidance on what I should do next!

HI there,

I have suffered from something similar, Take a look at my post. I found a short course of doxycycline helped me. You should probably see an internal medicine doc to rule out any infectious diseases first, and perhaps a rheumatologist. That was the path i went.. then a vacation to Africa meant I needed to be on antimalarial medication. I chose doxycycline for the cheap price.. Ironic how a $4 generic drug fixed what 3 specialists could not.

Good luck to you

Hello want2run,

I am having the same symptoms 3 1/2 yrs after TKR.
It started about 4 months ago, and in the beginning responded to icing & Ibuprofin.
Has become constant in the last 2 weeks, and although it responds to new meds (Neproxin)
it will swell up very quickly with no movement (the last time, just sitting).
I have an appt with an new OS in a week, and will post results.
Have you had any success since your post
Hope you're running by the time you read this.

I have just read your story I'm 40 yrs old female same as you fit and healthy I've had my knee problems for 7 years now. I have seen most consultants who have tested me for everything all negative I have had 15 -16 infusion drains several steroids not pleasent at all I was lucky not to get an infection as a joint should not be aspirated that many times It even swelled the day after a steroid, I went to a new consultant where I had the osmic acid injection, again swelled like a balloon few months after. I am now under a surgeon who has now done the second partial Synovectomy which was in feb 2012 and joy it has now swollen again when it's up it's very painful and makes you feel extremely run down. My surgeon has suggested a full Synovectomy so I am now looking into the injection. I have looked into that many causes I'm afraid it's turned into a guessing game all I can advice is to find a good consultant I hope I haven't been to negative but I do think these complaints can go as quick as they came.
