Recurrent kneecap dislocations-questions regarding surgery!
« on: March 24, 2009, 10:33:05 PM »
Hey everyone, so here's my story in a nutshell....I am 28 years old, have been dealing with recurrent bilateral kneecap dislocations since I was 6 years old (twice in my life they have both dislocated at the same time!).  When I was younger, I was told that surgery would not help, however I have now heard from 2 ortho docs that they can "fix this with surgery."  The ortho surgeon I recently saw said that the lateral relase/VMO tightening has a 90% chance of working, but it will be 6 weeks of no weight bearing, 2-3 months out of work....this is very frustrating to hear, as I am a nurse, and am on my feet for 12+ hours a day!  However, I am becoming quite paranoid/panicky about my knees (my right one has always been worse than my left) and know I need to do something.....they are slipping more and more, and the only time I feel safe is when I am wearing braces on both legs.  I would love to hear from people who have had this surgery, and let me know what the recovery is like and if the surgery has been successful!  Any information would be helpful!

Hi there,

It is definitely worth giving surgery if you have had problems that long.

Just make sure your surgeon is planning to do the lateral release for the right reasons. Not doing so can cause further problems.

Like Welshbabe said, it wouldn't hurt to get a second opinion. Make sure that the surgeon you sees specialises in patella instability. It is so important.
